Learn basic Hawaiian!

Great audiobook simply because it exists! It is very hard to find any audio learning for Hawaiian so I was very excited when I found this. Yes some words/translations are obscure but that is due to the nature of the language.

They start at the beginning and teach you some basic grammar rules along with the alphabet and go forward from there. The reason I only gave it 4 stars rather than 5 is because I do agree with the other not so good reviews that suggest this audiobook would be greatly improved if it were broken up better and into many more chapters so it would be easier to go back or forward while driving... Otherwise this is great learning tool and I’m very excited I found it!

Great for grammar, not for vocabulary

The best feature of this book is the ability to explain Hawaiian grammar in easy to understand ways. Other language audiobooks pretty much ignore the grammar rules and expect you to pick them up from context, but this book is wonderfully different. The second best feature is that the book exists at all, since neither Pimsleur nor Rosetta carries Hawaiian as a language.

Unfortunately there are some downsides. The format does not work for me, since I listen to language tapes while driving and this programs requires a lot of pause and repeat. I am used to the Pimsleur approach of 30 minute lessons with a lot of repetition. This book is broken into chapters that are 0.5-5 minutes long, which makes it aggravating to keep track of where a lesson begins and ends. The vocabulary is odd, with a lot of obscure words (demigod, ancient times, etc) and no useful phrases (I would LOVE to know how to say " please repeat" or "How do you say...").

Ultimately I felt this was worth the money. I am using this audiobook while driving in conjunction with Duolingo during my lunch break to get an understanding of Hawaiian.

terrible format

repeat twice without knowing what you are saying so no way to anchor it in your memory. then told once the translation and move on. teaches ridiculous words and phrases no one would ever use. spear a whale, 1800 missionary, we all sit because it's windy. elephant.
