A Good Morning America 'January Book That Can Get Us Through Anything'

A Most Anticipated Novel of 2022 by The New York Times, Good Housekeeping, Harper's Bazaar, Entertainment Weekly, New York Post, PopSugar, Shondaland, Yahoo!, and Crime Reads

A destitute woman deceives her way into the guesthouse of a Hollywood Hills mansion and inadvertently becomes a target in the twisted game of the wealthy family upstairs in the next intoxicating novel from Eliza Jane Brazier.

Lyla has always believed that life is a game she is destined to win, but her husband, Graham, takes the game to dangerous levels. The wealthy couple invites self-made success stories to live in their guesthouse and then conspires to ruin their lives. After all, there is nothing worse than a bootstrapper.

Demi has always felt like the odds were stacked against her. At the end of her rope, she seizes a risky opportunity to take over another person’s life and unwittingly becomes the subject of the upstairs couple’s wicked entertainment. But Demi has been struggling forever, and she’s not about to go down without a fight.

In a twist that neither woman sees coming, the game quickly devolves into chaos and rockets toward an explosive conclusion.

Because every good rich person knows: in money and in life, it’s winner takes all. Even if you have to leave a few bodies behind.

Critic reviews

"The rich live differently than the rest of us, and that's never more evident than this chilling account of one family that plays a sick and twisted game with their tenants." —Good Housekeeping

“[T]hink: “Gossip Girl” meets a murder-mystery spinoff of The Real Housewives.... it’s one of the best books I’ve read this year." —New York Post

“With writing that truly embodies the raw evil of greed, Brazier crafts cunning characters whom readers will be so excited to hate. —Shondaland

Good book, worth the read/listen

I enjoyed this book, couldn't wait to see what happened. The flip flopping between the 2 characters was a little confusing at times, trying to figure out when it took place but it always ended up making sense. I do wish there would have been a little bit more info at the end but it summed it up pretty much.
Love this author's writing and hope there are more books to come!!

Twisted and fun

Really enjoyed the actors’ reading. Voices were pleasant and emotive. The story was interesting but towards the end it became a little predictable.

Listen for the outstanding narration

Not for everyone sort of twisted and dark but so out there it draws you in but again the two best narrators might be why

Boring and poorly written

Made the mistake of buying this title and while I listened to the whole book hoping there will be a turn in the story or a story of redemption, none of that happened. Don’t waste your time on this one. Immediately swipe left!

This is the PERFECT guilty pleasure book!

I absolutely loved this thriller. Lyla is married to Graham, the perfect husband with the perfect life. They are rich and beautiful. Only, Graham gets bored very easily and it's up to Lyla to keep him entertained or else.
This book was quick and witty. I loved the dark humor and sarcastic comedy, but I also think the author was bidding to some serious issues in the US. Shake and vapid came to mind often. I just loved it.

A Culturally-Insightful Wink of a Novel

Solid, contemporary story albeit grotesque in some places, clearly intentionally. The heavy-handedness of the scent allegory got nauseating after awhile, and the cultural and societal platitudes are a bit hyperbolic—some hilariously so and some mildly cringey. I laughed out loud several times…finally, this felt like My Year of Rest and Relaxation in some places, particularly with the way the author played with the reliability of the narrator. Overall, it was an engaging story featuring a novel twist of a statement on the behaviors and attitudes of the 1%. Thriller in some places, comedy and drama in others, odd romances…I recommend it for the laughs alone, but there’s a little something for everyone here.

Good Light Mystery

I like when I can't tell the direction and this is one of those stories. All but one of the characters are a little shallow regarding development, but it's a relatively short book and you get the idea. I could see this as a movie as I was listening.

Still reeling from how everything came together

Eliza Brazier has a quirky dark mind that keeps you guessing. Quite possibly the most interesting author out there. Brilliant.

Fresh guilty pleasure!

Just listened to this book straight through. If I could compare this book in styles I would say, if you liked books like You and Dexter you are gonna love this book. Wouldn’t surprise me if there was a movie made from it. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Psychological thriller meets dark comedy. Guilty pleasure read for sure.

I can’t stand Lyla, the emotionally wrecked wife who is a bit paranoid. She gets more and more paranoid as the story goes on. She’s innocent and disturbed at the same time. She’s married to Graham who is a straight psychopath! His mother Margo is a narcissist through and through.

If I enjoyed it so much why the low rating? While I loved the plot and the even the “bad rich people” characters, my biggest issue is with the changing POV and timelines. For example, you’ll get a scene through Lyla’s POV and several chapters later you return to the scene through Demi’s POV.

Not withstanding the POV issue, this is a great read.
