Publisher's summary

New Orleans, 1838. When Benjamin January suddenly finds that his services playing piano at extravagant balls held by the city's wealthy are no longer required, he ends up agreeing to accompany sugar planter Henri Viellard and his young wife, Chloe, on a mission to Washington to find a missing friend. Plunged into a murky world, it soon becomes clear that while it is very possible the Viellards' friend is dead, his enemies are very much alive - and ready to kill anyone who gets in their way.

Another wonderful Benjamin January story

I first became acquainted with this author 20+ years ago and I am pleased to re-connect with her. If the stories of antebellum New Orleans on the complex relationships in black and white societies are really enthralling. I always want to know what happens next, and she always manages to find a particular aspect of the world at this time to focus on, to inform, and to entertain. This time, mathematics and spycraft! Who knew? Not to mention the complicated situation in Washington in a divided country, half slave and half free. The narrator was pretty good except for some miss pronunciations here and there. Sometimes even in the English. I really don’t understand why there appears to be no one doing edits on these things anymore. But never mind. All in all a good lesson

I miss Ron Butler

I am currently listening but couldn't wait to say how VERY MUCH I miss Ron Butler!
And if you did have to change narrators, couldn't you have chosen a man?

Bring Ron Back

It was hard to get into the book as I did previously because they changed narrators. The pronunciations just were not the same which, evidently, was something that was essential to the storyline. I love the series so I muddle thru but I really miss Ron as the narrator.

Great Detective Series

This Benjamin January series by Barbara Hambly has been a favorite for many years. This is my first audible edition and it didn’t disappoint.

Riveting stories

Ms Hambly tells it like it was. Her books should be required reading.
I much prefer Mr Butler as the narrator!
