Publisher's summary

An honest, soul-searching pursuit of biblical answers to one of Christianity's most challenging questions: What do you do when God meets your prayers with silence?

Many of us have struggled with prayers that seem to go unanswered, and Pete Greig has been down that difficult road of doubt. This book is both intensely personal and deeply theological - a book born out of his wife Sammy's fight for her life after a horrifying diagnosis.

The acclaimed author of Red Moon Rising wrestles with the hard side of prayer, how to respond when there seem to be no answers, and how to cope with those who seek to interpret our experience for us.

For those struggling with prayer, God on Mute brings a message of hope and comfort, but also a better understanding of how we communicate with our Creator. Using the timeline of Holy Week (from Maundy Thursday through Easter Sunday) as a template, Greig explores four main questions about prayer from all angles:

  • How am I going to get through this?
  • Why aren't my prayers being answered?
  • Where is God when he seems silent?
  • When every prayer is answered...what does that mean?

Silence in response to our most heart-felt prayers is the hardest thing for a person of faith to wrestle with. The world collapses. Then all goes quiet. Words can't explain what we're going through. People avoid you and don't know what to say. So you turn to Him and you pray. You need Him more than ever before. But somehow even God Himself seems on mute. And this sinks into us with a sense of futility....

But even in this crushing silence, there is a way forward. Here is a story of faith, hope, and love beyond all understanding.

Helped me so much!

I love this book! It helped me so much. There have been times in my life when I knew God heard and answered my prayers. But, there was one prayer that I literally prayed for years believing not only that God heard me but I also believed he would answer the prayer in the way I had asked. He didn’t and I stopped praying. This book taught me so much. It was not another “preachy” kind of book. Well written. Soothing. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to understand what can seem like silence.

One of the most important books you will ever read.

The problem of suffering & unanswered prayer is a reality that must be confronted, and Pete Greig does it beautifully. This book is incredibly honest, heartbreakingly authentic, and deeply rooted in Scripture. I’ve never written a review of anything, but would write a thousand for this book if I could. In addition to being a master storyteller, Pete is also an extremely talented narrator. I am deeply convinced this book will remain one of the most important I will read in my lifetime.

So helpful!

I so appreciate this book! Thank you Peter Greig for writing in such a genuine, heartfelt way that doesn’t AT ALL shy away from the hard questions. The suggestions made for how to deal with very difficult realities seem so practical and doable. God bless you, your family & ministry!

Love!

This book is, of course, great for Christian believers who wonder why prayers go unanswered. However, it is also great for those struggling in faith or uncertain of their beliefs, if you can read it with an open mind.
In my opinion, you do not have to believe or buy into all conservative evangelical beliefs to get something (a lot!) out of this book. Whether you believe in God, or just a higher power, or the Universe, there are great lessons in here.
I enjoyed it so much that after listening to the audio, I purchased the hard copy.

Remarkable!

This audible edition was made even more remarkable because the author narrated it, infusing it with his passion and, at times, his surprising and brutal honesty. There is so much to absorb in this book that I've listened twice and plan to listen a third time.

The Mystery and Promise of Prayer

Pete Greig has written and narrated an answer to the question many of us have felt: "Where is God and why aren't my prayers being answered?" This is a sensitive, non-judgmental book. To me, it is rare among "Christian" authors, to speak from their hearts, pointing to the reality that there may be many prayers we determine as "unanswered," that are being answered differently than we want or recognize. My faith is encouraged by Pete Greig's journey with his "unanswered" prayers. Yet he shares the innermost lessons they have learned, as he and his wife live with her serious health challenges in faith and hope.

I highly recommend this in Audible format, especially for those suffering greatly. Mr. Greig's voice, diction and vocabulary are relaxing, soothing and encouraging. Perhaps you will doze off for much needed rest. That's great! You can back up and go over it again.

I recommend this work to anyone who wishes to thoroughly explore the subject of prayer. No matter from a sceptical, cynical or even from a strong belief and practice of prayer. Blessings.

Brilliant - but I would love...

...the author to add a chapter on the Holy Spirit. This isn't discussed in any detail. Why did Jesus say it is better for Him to depart so that we have the Holy Spirit. All the power and all the wonder that the Holy Spirit demonstrates in the Bible hasn't translated to our modern age - yes God may be on Mute but with the Holy Spirit we were given the gift of great power to help this world and heal the sick, yet it doesn't happen often - why provide the power and issue the instruction to no avail?

Everyone should read this. God is quiet at times. Greig’s honest words usher you into the presence of Jesus even when you might not be able to feel it.
