Publisher's summary

From New York Times bestselling author R. A. Salvatore comes the follow-up to Starlight Enclave and thrilling second novel in his newest trilogy, The Way of the Drow, expanding the Forgotten Realms through the adventures of Drizzt, Catti-brie, Jarlaxle, Artemis Entreri, and Zaknefein…and a society of drow unlike one any elf from Menzoberranzan could possibly imagine.

There’s a lot that Jarlaxle doesn’t know: is he the lone survivor of the raid on the slaad fortress, can he even find a way to get out, and beyond his immediate predicament, could he possibly escape the ice caverns and get help for his friends?

However, what Jarlaxle does know is that if he plans to come back—if Catti-brie, Entreri, and Zaknafein are to have any hope of surviving—he’s going to have to bring back far more firepower. An army of aevendrow seems unlikely, so he must go home and pull together a team with great skill and unimaginable power.

But how will he get home? Will such a collection of warriors and mages come to his aid? And even if he manages all that, will it be enough? For Jarlaxle has seen the slaadi’s power and their god in a most personal and terrifying way.

Trapped in the ice while the world is on fire, Jarlaxle is in a race against time—and burdened with a magical secret—to save a peaceful city and his companions.

And he’s running out of tricks in his bag of holding…

Really love these characters.

There is so much to love in the characters brought to life in this book. I feel deeply for theirs wins and losses. It's sad, it's fun, it's funny and it is a very engaging story.

R.A.Salvatore never disappoints.

Loved it, as usual. Hopefully he doesn't stop with Drizzt and the Companions of the Hall.

This is how you diversify an established franchise

in other fictional universes, the writers just don't seem to understand that you cannot just snap your fingers and change the core beliefs of beloved and established characters and lore. it has to make sense in a way that doesn't offend the very people that made it possible for the writer to make a living by writing fiction. RAS has successfully introduced much needed changes to the lore of the Forgotten Realms. The Drow having a legitimate chance at redemption comes off as 100% organic, authentic and natural. well done! others would very well have taken the easy path of.. "ooo it's a magic curse and it's been broken.now everyone is good.")

practiced story telling

Almost like a song, the rhythm of the story flowed, building and breaking. and the reader was attentive to the story.

Fantastic

It's a bittersweet book for me. My dad passed away in April and this was a series he introduced me to, and there are many happy memories of discussing the adventures of Drizzt.

Not a book you want to pick up as your first foray into the series. If you dont want to start at the very beginning, start with Starlight Enclave, but I'd strongly encourage starting with the very very first book in Drizzt's tale. For those that know what the series is about, you'll have more of the same, with characters being included in this new arc from previous ones. It's still focusing on building the region introduced in Starlight Enclave, but I'd bet that there's going to be some form of development as we've seen in previous books between the races.

That all being said, the story is excellent, the philosophy of Drizzt is on par with what I'd expect, and the action is intense.

Worth the read/listen.
