Forecast geopolitics and markets with this clear and insightful resource

Geopolitical Alpha: An Investment Framework for Predicting the Future provides listeners with an original and compelling approach to forecasting the future and beating the markets while doing so. Persuasively written by author, investment strategist, and geopolitical analyst Marko Papic, the book applies a novel framework for making sense of the cacophony of geopolitical risks with the eye toward generating investment-relevant insights.

Geopolitical Alpha posits that investors should ignore the media-hyped narratives, insights from "smoke-filled rooms", and most of their political consultants, and instead focus exclusively on the measurable, material constraints facing policymakers. In the tug-of-war between policymaker preferences and their constraints, the latter always win out in the end. Papic uses a wealth of examples from the past decade to illustrate how one can use his constraint-framework to generate Geopolitical Alpha. In the process, the book discusses:

  • What paradigm shifts will drive investment returns over the next decade
  • Why investment and corporate professionals can no longer treat geopolitics as an exogenous risk
  • How to ignore the media and focus on what drives market narratives that generate returns

Perfect for investors, C-suite executives, and investment professionals, Geopolitical Alpha belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in the intersection of geopolitics, economics, and finance.

Better in print and needs to be shorter

I found my way to this book via Grant Williams and I’ll certainly apply the constraints (not being subject to preferences) however I found myself referring to charts and images so often that I believe this would be better in print.

Further, there was some waffle and repetition and would have preferred that time used to demonstrate more examples of practical application.

Good mental picture needed

As I listen to this book, it was very interesting and insightful as to how the geopolitical circumstances in the world affect the economy and the markets. However, because they were numerous references to charts and graphs, which I am sure were very helpful. It was more difficult to follow the presentation as I listen I am not sure that I want to purchase the hard copy personally however, it would’ve been more interesting to have had the copy available to me as I listened, I recognize there’s probably a PDF available for it however, when I listen to the audio versions, I rarely refer to the PDF, because that then cuts into the flow of my listening.

Great useful info, phenomenal narrator, “unbiased author” leans very obviously to the left.

Useful info and a great story, but the not so subtle digs made to the Republican Party throughout the book made it somewhat annoying to hear every 20 minutes or so. Regardless of the chapter subject matter.

Excellent from start to finish.

There wasn’t a boring or bad chapter. This was one of those books you try to savor and slow your way through, dreading reaching the end. I hope Mr. Papic writes another book at some point.

Great read...

As one who hopes to be successful at investing, this book gave me a better understanding of what is termed as psychological investing over other books. Thanks

The Most Awful Piece of Garbage I’ve Read

I don’t want to waste any more words on this author than I have to, so I’ll try to put my opinion into 3 brief statements:
1. The author has a habit of hiding behind what he probably considers “intelligent verbiage”, but the reality is that his jargon cannot hide his lack of actual understanding of financial markets.
2. The author points to Europe’s dependency on Russian natural gas as a reason that the two could never enter a serious conflict to evidence one of his assertions. Need I say more?
3. The author jokingly references basic mathematics to help give credibility to his argument, or so he states. He implies that models and over-quantification of ideas cannot apply to real world situations. I wonder if he has any knowledge of hedge funds such as Renaissance Technologies that almost exclusively use mathematics to consistently beat the market in the real world.

In summary, the author is a moron and my money is wasted. I’m pissed.
