Publisher's summary

  • Updated throughout with recent developments and additional illustrations
  • Reveals how solar outbursts caused the end of the last ice age, unleashed catastrophe upon ancient advanced civilizations, and led to six millennia of a solar-induced Dark Age
  • Includes evidence from solar science, geology, oceanic circulation patterns, the Sphinx, the underground cities of Cappadocia, the Easter Island rongorongo glyphs, and the Göbekli Tepe complex in Turkey

In this newly revised and expanded edition, updated throughout with recent developments, geologist Robert Schoch builds upon his revolutionary theory that the origins of the Sphinx date back much further than 2500 BCE and examines scientific evidence of the catastrophe that destroyed early high culture nearly 12,000 years ago.

Combining evidence from multiple scientific disciplines, Schoch makes the case that the abrupt end of the last ice age, circa 9700 BCE, was due to an agitated sun. Solar outbursts unleashed electrical/plasma discharges upon Earth, triggering dramatic climate change as well as increased earthquake and volcanic activity, fires, high radiation levels, and massive floods. Schoch explains how these events impacted the civilizations of the time, set humanity back thousands of years, and led to six millennia of a Solar-Induced Dark Age (SIDA). Applying the SIDA framework to ancient history, he explores how many megalithic monuments, petroglyphs, indigenous traditions, and legends fall logically into place, including the underground cities of Cappadocia, the Easter Island rongorongo glyphs, and the Göbekli Tepe complex in Turkey. He also reveals that our sun is a much more unstable star than previously believed, suggesting that history could repeat itself with a solar outburst powerful enough to devastate modern society.

Weaving together a new view of the origins and antiquity of civilization and the dynamics of the planet we live on, Schoch maintains we must heed the megalithic warning of the past and collectively prepare for future events.

fascinating

The book is very technical and places, but the author takes the time to say it in plain language.

Interesting

It is a rather interesting listed. I admit that it could be difficult for the non technical person to follow. Some of material is fully supported other elements less so. Some is pure speculation. On the other hand there are some interesting tidbits into as well.

The Sun!

All the different planetary things we experience. The different weather patterns. The volcanic activity. The tectonic plate shifting activity. All of those things, all determined by the Sun.

Well researched. Presents a compelling narrative.

Well researched and annotated. Presents a compelling narrative for a case that suggests civilization has a rich history that is almost missing and points the way to areas that may provide more supporting evidence. Its a great listen and a great read.

Excellent book full of interesting ideas!

Dr. Schoch and his wife Catherine are some of the most original thinkers out there. Hopefully, we all get a chance to find out what the contents of the underground chamber, which is supposed to be located in front of the Sphinx, are. What would make this audiobook even better, is if it was read by the author.

Easy listen, oodles of information

I liked this book so much that once it was finished I started it back over. Dr. Schoch writes in a manner that makes the information simple to take in a digest. His attention to detail and never diverting into tangents are refreshing. He is a true professional and it shows in this work and his others. Thank you.

Thought provoking!!!

Great explanation of solar cycles resulting in climatic change and extinction events. We may be overdue.

Incredibly interesting

A wonderfully interesting theory of the past, but it's quite intensely technical for listening alone.

History Changing and paradigm shifting

This work will be cited and referenced for centuries and millennia, and it’s author(s) enshrined in history for daring to challenge the prevailing wisdom of another discipline by presenting the absolute geologic proof of rain induced weathering on the great Sphinx and it’s inclosure on the Giza plateau, extending the chronological timeline of advanced human history and culture to the cataclysm that ended the Younger Dryas and before. To a time when Giza was savannah and traditional archeologists suggest we were chasing mastodons with spears and wearing leaves over our bits.

We have forgotten more than we remember of our ancient past and cultures, and Schoch traverses the globe from Easter Island and it’s mysterious RongoRongo script to the purposefully buried in unthinkable antiquity Göbekli Tepe, proving sophisticated human culture and engineering existed all over our planet some 12,000 years ago and before and presents the geologic evidence for a solar induced cataclysm circa 10,800BCE.

To say Dr. Schoch and his theories received some push back to his initial redating of the Sphinx in his collaboration with the legendary author and mystic John Anthony West in the 90’s is an understatement. Archeologists scoffed and hoped their data would be forgotten and the anomalies ignored.

As I write this review in 2021, the pile traditionally swept under the rug by traditional archeologists and the fairy tale of linear human progress has grown a bit- it’s gone from the size of the chamber Dr. Schoch and his team discovered beneath the paw of the Sphinx and is now about the size of Göbekli Tepe. : P

I had the privilege of traveling to many of the sites mentioned in this book in Egypt with Dr. Schoch and his wife in 2019 and had the opportunity to see for myself not only the water weathering of the great Sphinx but also evidences for massive plasma discharges that Schoch hypothesizes were resultant from not a comet impact at the end of the Younger Dryas but a CME, or coronal mass ejection. Subsequent evidence is discussed at length both geologically as well as possible cultural representations of what would have surely been horrifying plasma storms in our ancestors skies from all over the world.

The paradigms have finally begun to shift and with them the engineering genius and sophistication of our ancient ancestors are finally being acknowledged, thanks entirely to the bravery of the pioneers willing to take the slings and arrows to move our understanding of our common history foreword.

Desperately wanted to like it

I’m a huge fan of Graham Hancock and Randall Carlson. Between podcasts and Graham’s books I am intrigued by the notion of a forgotten, advanced, ancient civilization. Dr. Schoch is frequently referenced from the perspective of his geological expertise. But this book is just a mess, it meanders in to much less empirical notions, doubles back over itself and some of the material presented, because it is so far from mainstream, risks the overall credibility of the author. If given the choice again, I would not have purchased this work.
