Publisher's summary

Victoria Coren Mitchell's gripping poker memoir now available for the first time in audio.

In September 2006, Victoria Coren Mitchell won a million dollars on the European Poker Tour. For Richer, for Poorer tells the story of that victory, but also of a 20-year obsession with the game. It is a journey which has taken Victoria from a secret culture of illegal cash games to the high-stakes glamour of Las Vegas and Monte Carlo, and brought with it friendship, laughter, and money, but also loneliness, heartbreak and defeat. With disarming honesty, Victoria lays all of this bare. For Richer, for Poorer also tells the story of the poker revolution. How did this cult card game, populated by a small community of colourful and eccentric players, move from the back streets to the mainstream in a few short years? It is a fascinating story from a trusted insider.

For Richer, for Poorer was published in 2009. This audiobook was recorded in 2023.

Finally

It’s fantastic to Vicki Coren Michell to be reading her book. Why it’s taken since now to do it, I haven’t a clue. Well worth the wait. Thanks Vicki

I Loved It

I know next to nothing about poker. I played with friends decades ago, so I knew the ranking of hands but none of the real terminology. You don't need to know about poker to enjoy this book. I was a fan of Alan Coren and also really enjoy watching Victoria on British TV. In this book, you see her smarts, her humour, her vulnerability - her love of her family, friends, and poker. The last few minutes of the audio is a glossary of poker terms. When I heard it, I wanted to go back and listen to the book again! I might just do that. Thanks for recording it Victoria - I'm sure it was a huge commitment of time in your busy life. Greatly appreciated.

Clever, funny, enlightening

I didn't know much about poker, but Victoria Coren Mitchell is such a clever and funny person, I thought I'd give it a go. Not disappointed! You really don't have to be into poker to enjoy this, but as a bonus, you'll know a lot more about how it became popular pastime. But it's really her story that's the main reason to read it.
