Story
Most of the big money belongs to Torquil Paterson Frisby, the dyspeptic American millionaire--but that doesn't stop him wanting more out of it. His niece, the beautiful Ann Moon, is engaged to "Biscuit", Lord Biskerton, who doesn't have very much of the stuff and so he has to escape to Valley Fields to hide from his creditors. Meanwhile, his old school friend Berry Conway, who is working for Frisby, himself falls for Ann--just as Biscuit falls for her friend Kitchie Valentine. Life in the world of Wodehouse can sometimes become a little complicated.

The hideous Walsingford Hall is home to an odd assortment of coves…The vile premises belong to Sir Buckstone, who is in a little financial difficulty. So for a little monetary help he puts a roof over the heads of people like (among others) Tubby Vanringham, the adoring slave of cold-hearted Miss Whittaker. His brother Joe has fallen head over heels for Sir Buck’s daughter, Jane. Uncle Fred, or to give him his full title of Frederick Altamont Cornwallis Twistleton, fifth Earl of Ickenham, is considered by some as a splendid gentleman - a sportsman to his fingertips. Mr. Twistleton, nephew to the Earl, and otherwise known as Pongo to his friends, has a differing view. He simply describes his uncle as being loopy to the tonsils. But when the eccentric and well-loved Uncle Fred plays Cupid to Lord Emsworth, his old friend at Blandings Castle, little did he know that he would be known as Impostor A and the Lord’s beloved pig, the Empress, as Impostor B....

It takes a lot of effort for Jimmy Crocker to become Piccadilly Jim – nights on the town roistering, headlines in the gossip columns, a string of broken hearts and breaches of promise. Eventually he becomes rather good at it and manages to go to pieces with his eyes open. But no sooner has Jimmy cut a wild swathe through fashionable London than his terrifying Aunt Nesta decides he must mend his ways. He then falls in love with the girl he has hurt most of all, and after that things get complicated. In a dizzying plot, impersonations pile on impersonations....

When a spaceship landed in an open field in the quiet mill town of Sorrow Falls, Massachusetts, everyone realized humankind was not alone in the universe. With that realization everyone freaked out for a little while. Or almost everyone. The residents of Sorrow Falls took the news pretty well. This could have been due to a certain local quality of unflappability, or it could have been that in three years the ship did exactly nothing other than sit quietly in that field, and nobody understood the full extent of this nothing the ship was doing better than the people who lived right next door.

In Riders of the Dawn, a young gunslinger is changed for the better by a meeting with a beautiful woman. A classic range-war western, this novel features that powerful, romantic, strangely compelling vision of the American West for which L'Amour's fiction is known. In the author's words: "It was a land where nothing was small, nothing was simple. Everything, the lives of men and the stories they told, ran to extremes."

Story
Breakfast of Champions (1973) provides frantic, scattershot satire and a collage of Vonnegut's obsessions. His recurring cast of characters and American landscape was perhaps the most controversial of his canon; it was felt by many at the time to be a disappointing successor to Slaughterhouse-Five, which had made Vonnegut's literary reputation.

“The Heron” is the nickname a big-city accountant has attached to himself in his new home near San Diego, where he’s using the alias to avoid a hit man who may be after him. It seems a former client believes that The Heron has skipped town with several million dollars not his own. Don Winslow’s ensuing, entertaining yarn is by turns twisty, dark, and comical as we observe the delicate dance between the pursuer and the pursued.

One of Wodehouse's most entertaining raconteurs is sitting in the Angler's Rest, sipping hot whiskey and lemon. Spats. Cats. Hats. This Book has Everything.
One of the outstanding collections of Wodehouse short stories. Eleven delightful tales, the best being "Noblesse Oblige", "Uncle Fred Flits By", "Archibald and the Masses", "Trouble Down at Tudsleigh" and "Tried in the Furnace", with everything else running a close second.
"Good-Bye to All Cats" contains what is possibly the funniest description of a character in all of Wodehouse: "She was like a chunk of ice cream with spikes all over it".
I've always thought that the last story, "The Fiery Wooing of Mordred" was a shade off the Master's usual high standards, but I've come to realize that feeling is merely due to the fact that it's the last story--and I know that I'll have to go back to Real Life again once it's over.

Game, Wodehouse style
For of course, when it comes to wooing, it's simply half the battle to get a line on the adored object's favorite literature. Ascertain what it is, and mug it up, and decant an excerpt or two in her presence, and before you can say 'what ho', she's looking at you like a kindred old soul and is all over you.

Old fashioned laughs!
Transport yourself back to the days when collars were separate from shirts, men wore spats, and socks were held up by garters, and enjoy these stories from Wodehouse. In Wodehouse tales, people fell in love at first sight (try writing THAT in a story today!). My favorites were the tales of Freddie, who had quite a few girls who were "the only girl in the world". Of course, he loses each and every one of them. We have a house full of cats (oh so funny) and a "ghost" who paves the way for true love. Add to the mix a visit from Uncle Fred and several Mr. Mulliner tales, and you've got a book that had me laughing out loud numerous times.

Can't miss for Wodehouse fans!
What did you love best about Young Men in Spats?
The best thing about this recording is the way Jonathan Cecil delivers the narration--he's an excellent and expressive reader.
What about Jonathan Cecil’s performance did you like?
His vocal characterizations are amazing and consistent, and a great fit for the material.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I've listened to it more than once because I enjoy it so much. This is a collection of short stories featuring different characters from the Wodehouse imagination.
Any additional comments?
I'm glad it's unabridged, because I don't want to miss a word of Wodehouse's humor!

Excellent stories - Freddie Widgeon, our 1st encounter with Frederick Altamont Cornwallis Twistleton, 5th Earl of Ickenham aka Uncle Fred, Mr. Mulliner - and the absolute best narrator in Jonathan Cecil. I cannot listen to any other narrators (except Jeremy Sinden reading Pigs Have Wings).

The only storyteller, the only narrator
If you haven’t as yet indulged in P.G. Wodehouse then you’ve missed so very much. And if you’re going to try out audio, then the only narrator for the Wodehouse job, is Jonathan Cecil. Every other narrator either pales or whimpers in corners by comparison
