Publisher's summary

Curiosity just might be the death of Mrs. Murphy - and her human companion, Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen. Small towns are like families: Everyone lives very close together. . .and everyone keeps secrets. Crozet, Virginia, is a typical small town - until its secrets explode into murder. Crozet's thirty-something post-mistress, Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen, has a tiger cat (Mrs. Murphy) and a Welsh Corgi (Tucker), a pending divorce, and a bad habit of reading postcards not addressed to her.

When Crozet's citizens start turning up murdered, Harry remembers that each received a card with a tombstone on the front and the message "Wish you were here" on the back. Intent on protecting their human friend, Mrs. Murphy and Tucker begin to scent out clues.

Meanwhile, Harry is conducting her own investigation, unaware her pets are one step ahead of her. If only Mrs. Murphy could alert her somehow, Harry could uncover the culprit before the murder occurs - and before Harry finds herself on the killer's mailing list.

Language of the Cats

What made the experience of listening to Wish You Were Here the most enjoyable?

Admittedly, it was hard for me to get into at first. After the third chapter I stopped and started at the beginning. Looking back at it the slow beginning was paramount to the story; small town, small people but their issues are the same as the big busy city. I would have said nothing started happening until the murders, but I was wrong. Though I don’t live far from where the story is based and am not a stranger to small town Virginia, I wasn’t connecting with the characters, not even Mrs. Murphy and Tucker (the tabby and the corgi of the story), but I appreciate why by the time the murders happen the pace was necessary to the story. It became an allegory of the town itself.

After the first two murders the story started to pick up pace a bit and was locking in my interest. There are two perspectives you have to keep in line as you read; Mrs. Murphy’ and the other animals, and Harry’s world of humans. I must admit I still don’t understand the clue Mrs. Murphy was giving Harry which is driving me crazy, but the story evolved into a wonderful Who-Done-It tale and close to the end I was screaming for the answer. Great read.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mrs. Murphy was really cool, but my favorite was Pewter.

What about Kate Forbes’s performance did you like?

Ms. Forbes did a great job in giving each character their own unique cadence, accent and pitch. It gave me a good sense of who the character were; pompus, demure, worldly and wise, her rendition added to the experience.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Your Cat's trying to Tell you something....

Couldn't even read the first chapter...

... so much cussing! I don't remember any in the other books I read. Disappointing. I will be crossing this author off my list.

It's The Cat's Meow!

Loved reading this book.Love listening to it even more.I find I've picked up bits I missed by reading as fast as I do. Hope that "Pay Dirt" and "Rest in Pieces" can also join Sneaky Pie's list of audio books soon.

No one cares about the humans

The dog and cat trying to solve the mystery was adorable and fun to listen to. Parts of the story held my attention, but I wasn't prepared for so much of the book to be centered on the main character's divorce. I just don't care about her failing marriage. I wanted more of a Miss Marple style mystery, so maybe I didn't enjoy it because my expectations were off. I found myself way more interested in Ms Murphy and Tucker than any of the humans in the story. The narrator did a great job, and I think if she hadn't been reading it I would have tuned out already.

great story, and takes place in my hometown. A+++

A great story, and takes place in my hometown. I felt like I knew the people. I loved that I could relate to the places, but even then great story. I have read the entire series and just came back to start again.

Cute, light read

Where does Wish You Were Here rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I can rank Wish You Were Here up there in my audiobooks - however, with over 100 titles in my library - I would prefer to rank the series (not done yet) rather than a single title.

Have you listened to any of Kate Forbes’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to Kate Forbes before and actually found this series by looking for other books she narrated. Kate is a fantastic narrator, she never disappoints.

Any additional comments?

This series is a cute, lite read – there is enough mystery to keep it interesting. I was concerned when I first realized that the animals talked – but it is endearing, if you are looking for a serious book, this is not it – the animals add comic relief without making the storyline too unrealistic. It is a great cozy mystery series.

Fun mystery!

This is the first in a series--and this in book form is out of print. I liked the characters and the fantasy of the animal opinions. The setting was great too! My husband is from the lil town of Crozet and so I loved hearing about places I have been. I recommend!!!

Disappointed

I listened to the preview and it sounded good but once I started listening the cursing started, very disappointing.

Pretty Good

This was okay book. The characters were believable and mystery was entertaining. I didn't care for the commentary of the cat and dogs but it didn't ruin the story.

Fluff Mystery

What did you like best about Wish You Were Here? What did you like least?

This book is easy to listen so if one is distracted for a moment, one doesn't lose the plot. However, thinking and talking animals are not my thing.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Kate Forbes?

Narration was decent.
