I am an avid eclectic reader
This is a collection of short stories so the pace of the story is quick. Paretsky has always moved her stories right along. I have listen to Jean Smart read a number of the V. I. books and she does a great job. I wish she had narrated them all. I hesitated in getting this book because it was only 4 hours and was a collection of short stories but I was not disappointed and it was a great break to go between two long books.
This is a very entertaining selection of V.I. Warshawski short stories. But, even the best books can be ruined by poor narration. You needn't worry with Jean Smart. She nails Victoria Iphigenia's attitude, wit, strength, and vulnerability. The characterization is perfect. Additionally, she does extremely well with the rest of the characters, particularly when it comes to Lottie's and Max's accents. Reading the books is a real treat, but listening to Jean Smart narrate them is a true pleasure. Well worth a purchase if you like the preternatural female private investigator.
