Publisher's Summary

He is back....
Hilary Thomas knew terror as a child, but never anything like this.

He is back....
He is hunting her with a sick desire more terrifying than hatred could ever be. And he is in her house again.

He is back....
He is on the stairs, and he can't be stopped. Hilary killed him once and he keeps coming back. Again and again.

He is back....
He is at her bedroom door.

    "Turn on the lights!"

I read this book when it first came out, and I haven't read any book since that terrified me more! It was very intense and I had to have the lights on to listen. Awesome book and awesome narrator. Definitely credit worthy.

    "Super Listen"

This is one of the best Koontz audios I have listened to this year. You can visualize each part as if it were a movie and identifying with the main character's position is mind boggling.

Dry and predictable. Way too much emphasis on the sub characters. This book is also slow. Just when the story starts to get good, it switches to the dull and boring sub characters lives. Not his best work. I'm sorry I wasted a book credit on this one.

    "What?"

This is my 6th Koontz book so I think I am familiar with his "out there" style which can be very interesting for some and a "Oh brother this is so stupid" for others. I am somewhere in between on this one. I will still continue to be a fan because some of his books are so good.

    "Whispers"

I have been a listener for many years and have never written a review. I have read all or most of this author's books and was appalled from the start by the amateur quality of the work. I had the plot in the bag in the first hour. The sex scenes were over the top and added nothing to the story. The dialogue needed serious editing. Even more annoying was the technical "dead spaces" that appeared several times throughout and the annoying whine of the narrator. I kept wondering if Dean Koontz was allowing someone else to write in his name. WHISPERS is a far cry from his brilliant "Odd Thomas" stories. I purchased the book excitedly because with a recent release date, I assumed it was his newest work . Ah....it all made sense at the end when we were told it was a work from the 80's.

As an artist, myself, I would be ashamed to sell my very bad early work. It would ruin my current reputation. I would suggest that Mr. Koontz reconsider his permission to sell his very bad early work. If this were my first Dean Koontz, it would have been my last.

    Story
"1st 1/3-1/2 slow; Libertarian politics noticed"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not so much. The first third to half of the book was really really slow and aggravating in parts. The heroine, Hillary, successfully fights off a rapist/murderer and, although armed, doesn't shoot him when he decides to leave. She lets him go and then is alone in the house & doesn't immediately call the police but changes clothes first. So one misogynistic cop doubts her story & expresses himself quite nastily.
Also, Libertarian views come thru uncomfortably. For example: "...Hilary had learned.... you could not rely on the government for anything... If the government couldn't balance its own budget and refrain from inflating its own currency...if it was even beginning to lose the will and the means to...provide national security..." (then it couldn't protect her from a psycho).
Another example, a business owner says; "The problem is Americans won't work for minimum wage. If you're a citizen you can get more from welfare for not working than you can working at a job that pays minimum wage." I am not sympathetic toward these particular views and I found them very heavy-handed and intrusive.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Cut out the entire character of Frank, the nasty cop who subsequently explains how he became the way he is. Waste of time. Slowed up the story. Made the front part much more aggravating. Cut out the Libertarian propaganda. Eliminate the torture of the poor maid. Finally, the doors in the lawn & the inhabitants - after 5 yrs creatures still living there??? On what nourishment??? And couldn't fit out the doors where they join? Airtight???

Which character – as performed by William Dufris – was your favorite?

I love Joshua, the lawyer - smart and brave. I guess Hillary is my favorite main character. I liked her determination to fight and her intelligence, which makes her lapses into stupidity even more unlikely: letting the attempted rapist/murderer walk out while holding a gun on him, leaving her bedroom trusting he'd left the house, not calling the police right away, changing clothes.... (Although I can't believe the idea of a twin was so slow in occurring to otherwise smart Hillary & everybody else...) Tony was absolutely perfect except when he doubted Hillary after the second attack--I wanted to kick him out just as Hillary was ready to do.

Did Whispers inspire you to do anything?

Check a little deeper into the politics of authors before spending money on them. Think I'll start reading Stephen King. I've seen quotes from him more aligned with my politics.

    Any additional comments?

I must say, I would fire that incompetent answering service in a heartbeat. I've dealt with answering services and they give away nothing. Not believable.

"NOT GOOD and I'm a big dean koontz fan"

I do not written reviews but this was so bad I could not believe it was koontz. In the story you have to believe that smart people can not think of the obvious but jump to the extreme.

    "A good listen story but..."

A good listen story but...you will have to suffer through some toe-curling sex descriptions (pink flowers, turgid nipples, his hardness, etc). In addition Dean Koontz is unfortunately unable to be subtle with his characters - if a character likes to paint - they are suddenly THE ONE AND ONLY AMAZINGLY TALENTED undiscovered artist EVER. If a character had a tough upbringing - not only was it THE WORST CHILDHOOD ever but they also find a reason to bring it up in virtually every situation to the point of teeth wrenching annoyance. He is also guilty of the American authors habit of being European pretentiouness - especially with Italian food - which is always found in THE BEST UNDISCOVERED BUT SMALL AND COSY AND WARM AND PERFECTLY AUTHENTIC ITALIAN RESTAURANT ever, which is obviously run by a friend of one of the main characters (who is always very generous with his/her PARM-E-ZHAAAN 'shavings'). Take it as a given that the wine compliments the food perfectly (and is never drunk, always... savoured) and the meal will always be gratis (but the AMAZING ARTIST CHARACTER will promise an INCREDIBLY WELL EXECUTED oil colour as a gift to say 'Tar'). In the same way John Grisham is guilty of shoe-horning Italy in to everything he can as well - just so he can rattle on about RICH DARK THICK SWEET COFFEE, PERFECTLY AL-DENTE PASSST-TAH and of course PARM-E-ZHAAAN SHAVINGS not grated, but SHAVINGS (of a brick sized block of cheese by the way, of course).

    But...

If you get past that it's a very good and gripping listen equal parts horror, disgust and psycho nasty business. I nearly stopped listening at the first bedroom/sex scene. I am glad I did not.

    "Koontz delivers the goods again."

Good book, some interesting twists in the story but that is a trademark of the author. The suspense, horror and mystery that Koontz fans expect is all here. So far as I?m aware this is the only Dean Koontz novel released as a movie, I can?t say the adaptation was good at all and really didn?t like the film, but the book is great!

    "Too drawn out"

This is the first Dean Koontz book I have listened to although I have read a number of them. Whether this was the difference I don't know, but I was disappointed with Whispers. It was a decent story but seemed to be drawn out. Too much pointless dialogue in my view which would slow the story down. Shame really as the story was good.

    "So Disappointing : ("
Would you try another book written by Dean Koontz or narrated by William Dufris?

As a fan of Dean Koontz I was so very disappointed with this book. I would always try further books by Dean Koontz as I am usually a big fan but what happened? It turned into a sloppy romance… there were parts I wanted to speed through, there was no, I don't know, no uuuumph! It felt like a third rate romance novel…. uuuugggg. If I had wanted chick lit I would have looked at that genre. It just got soppy and full of cliches… just wrong, wrong, wrong.

Has Whispers put you off other books in this genre?

No…. I just wouldn't have place it in this genre.

Did William Dufris do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

I think he did the best he could do with the script. His voice as the female lead was just… well… annoying. It just didn't work and I felt like it had a child like quality to it… it just wasn't happening.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Seriously disappointed. I always so look forward to any Dean Koontz books but this just really let me down and I feel I can't wait to finish it so I can get onto something I enjoy. Strangely it made me feel sarcastic towards the characters as they were so dumbed down and obvious.

    Any additional comments?

So disappointed I cannot recommend this book. From the plot to the characters to the reading to the soppy cliches… it really… and my apologies but I cannot think of any other word that truly works but it really sucked.
