Which Brings Me to You: A Novel in Confessions | [Steve Almond, Julianna Baggott]

Which Brings Me to You: A Novel in Confessions

Two rambunctious, romantic flameouts. One boring wedding. One heated embrace in a quiet coatroom. This is not exactly the recipe for true love. John and Jane’s lusty encounter at a friend’s wedding isn’t really the beginning of anything with any weight to it; even they know that. When they manage to pull back, it occurs to them that they might start this whole thing over properly. They might try getting to know one another first, through letters.

What follows is a series of traded confessions—of their messy histories, their past errors, their big loves, their flaws, and their passions. Each love affair, confessed as honestly as possible, reveals the ways in which Jane and John have grown and changed (or not changed) over the years—the people they’ve hurt, the ones still bruised, the ones who bruised them. Where all of this soul-baring will take them is the burning question behind every letter—a question that can only be answered when they meet again, finally, in the flesh.

What the Critics Say

“The constant mix of sweet and sour, of heart-swelling romance and smart-ass banter is…terrifically engaging.” (Entertainment Weekly)

"Wonderful "two sides of the coin" book"

I always enjoy reading good fiction, but in all truthfulness, it's really difficult to find authors (or novels for that matter) that can speak loud and clear to both men and women about love, or at least their perception of it, without forgetting about the other sex's take on the matter. Listening to this amazing audiobook has given me hope that it' is completely possible to find such literary works. Of course, I know this was a colaboration between two amazing writers and two very talented narrators, but it's possible, and it's amazing! It was a real joy to listen (not that their confessions didn't make me sad or worried, or a bit scared for our heroes' sanity), buy it was enjoyable non the less. Being a cynic on the outside/hopeless sensitive on the inside (as I think Jane herself described John and her's type), I'm often drawn to romance novels/chick lit in the hopes of finding something deep enough to make me believe for a split second I wasn't watching a Disney Princess's story for the gazillionth time, but I often finish feeling a bit... disappointed and ashamed to admit to anyone else but my closest friends, who know I'm indeed a romantic, that I read or listened to a certain "modern fairytale-like book". Which Brings Me to You is the kind of novel that you want to go and tell your most manly buddies/boyfriends/husbands to go listen to, because I'm pretty sure they'll like it, if not for the love story (or stories) at least for the hot scenes! It's the kind of book you like to brag about reading/listenong to before it became worldwide famous. It's that good.
Can't stop praising Kirby and Reneé for the amazing voice work, and of course the two amazingly talented writers who came up with such a clever way to take us throught these two stragers lives and loves. And, *spoiler alert*........... I'm really hopeful there are a John and a Jane out there who found each other and right now are together, trying to make it work, despite all the scars from the past.

    "Pen pals bare all"

Imagine sharing your deepest darkest secrets about your past boyfriends to a potential one - who would you talk about? How much would you share? I like the idea that these two characters are trying to get to know each other by divulging the strengths and weakneses about their past romances and in the process revealing a lot more about themselves than they would in a traditional relationship.

I also really enjoyed the two readers they brought a lot of character and emotion to the book. I liked being able to hear a man's voice when the male character spoke and a woman's when a female spoke. So much so that I'm wondering if there are any other books like this.
