When Crickets Cry | [Charles Martin]

When Crickets Cry

A man with a painful past. A child with a doubtful future. And a shared journey toward healing for both their hearts... It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girl’s pretty yellow dress can’t quite hide the ugly scar on her chest. The stranger understands more about it than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.

    "Best one so far!"

I have now listened to 3 Charles Martin books, and this is his best of the 3 (The Mountain Between Us and Chasing Fireflies). He has a very unique writing style. This book has such a sweet storyline. And I couldn't help but fall in love with Charlie! The narrator is perfect for this book. I only give 5 stars for books that "blow me away". This could have gotten 4-1/2 stars but it ended a bit too soon and abruptly for me. I don't like to wonder what happened next. At least give an epilogue and summarize! I highly recommend it.

    "My all time favorite read!!!"
Where does When Crickets Cry rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Best of all books I've ever read, not just in audio format

What did you like best about this story?

so personal and always with a surprise change over almost at the end

    Which scene was your favorite?

As a heart transplant recipient myself (way back in '94) I connect with many scenes and personalities in this amazing story. Now I pre-order and read all of Charles Martin's works and am never disappointed.

If you could rename When Crickets Cry, what would you call it?

title is perfect (once you read the story)

    Any additional comments?

I keep buying more and more copies to give away to friends and strangers I encounter

    ""Illogically Great""

As I try to write a review, I realize that there were some aspects of the book that I did not like: A good plot with what were supposed to be twists (I think) and not totally believable. In hindsight there were tons of holes in the logic of some sub-plot, but I can't help but love it! I was Completely invested in the characters by the 3rd chapter. I was about to attack my Iphone to get the characters to cooperate with what I thought should happen next. I love when books get me that invested that early on. Overall, worth the credit and the time of reading it twice.

    "Absolutely Wonderful!"
Where does When Crickets Cry rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book ranks pretty close to the top. I loved the story!

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the twists & turns. Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen, most of the time I was wrong!

What does Adam Verner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I loved his voice. He brought a calmness that made me want to just sit back & keep listening.

Who was the most memorable character of When Crickets Cry and why?

Hard to say. I think each of the main characters were equally strong. I think I liked Charlie. He was a true friend.

    Any additional comments?

Listen all the way to the end. Don't stop because you "just knows what happens". Great book!

Retired CFO, Army wife, Mom of five, Grandma of six, two sons who served in combat, love to read books that reflect my values and faith, love mysteries, historical, military stories, and books that don't waste my time . . . if it doesn't have an ending that was worth the wait, I'm not a happy camper.

"Growing up, Loving, Failing, Getting Back Up"

I fell in love with the story and the characters right away, and so will you. You will root for them, get mad at them, not understand them and eventually forgive them. The one thing that got on my nerves, until I learned to ignore it, is that the narration is supposed to be in a southern (Georgia) accent. I'm a southerner to the core, and the narrator is not from the south. If you aren't a born and bred southerner, this will probably not be an issue. It was distracting to me at first. That said, the writing is magnificent. The kindness in a little boy's heart that led to a lifetime of learning, sacrifice and a love so deep, weaves a wonderful tale. Enjoy.

"Not nearly as good as Chasing Fireflies"

I bought this because I had enjoyed Chasing Fireflies so much. This was an interesting story but I found some parts rather ponderous, long winded and too much detail. Eg I'm not really interested in the details of every tool in the workshop! The characters were well developed and there was a lot of wisdom dotted throughout. I think I will still be tempted to try another from this author.

    "Remarkable"

Normally, life-and-death dramatic novels leave me feeling manipulated - the author makes you care for a character then callously kills them off for dramatic effect - pisses me off (I'm thinking Jodi Picoult here - don't shoot, ok?).
Charles Martin is so sincere and writes such warm, in-depth and realistic characters that I even found the weepy parts very true to heart and life. I also enjoy his southern eccentrics, whom he clearly cherishes. They are presented as real people, if a bit off, not as clichés.
    Very worth a listen.

    "Luminous"
Where does When Crickets Cry rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

When Crickets Cry by Charles Martin is one of the best novels I've heard. It is breathtakingly beautiful in its depth, lyricism, sense of place, faith and knowledge.

Have you listened to any of Adam Verner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Adam Verner's voice and inflection were perfect. The sensitivity he brought the story lent a poignant, humorous, vibrant enrichment to the written words. An excellent performance.
