Editorial reviews

With multiple awards under his belt, including an AudioFile Magazine Golden Voice and Booklist's "Voice of Choice", narrator Dion Graham does not disappoint with his effortless performance of this story from the New York Times Magazine, adapted from Dave Eggers' novel The Circle. Mae has an enviable job at a social networking company, and slowly, she becomes seduced by a culture of constant updates and a seemingly unlimited chain of social connections. Graham fully engages listeners' attention with his attention to realism, and he works in subtle nuances of menace as Mae discovers the dark side of always being connected.

Publisher's summary

A million people, a billion, wanted to be where Mae was at this moment, entering this atrium, 30 feet high and shot through with California light, on her first day working for the only company that really mattered at all.

Thought provoking

While I do not count myself among the wearers of tinfoil hats, this story just might get you thinking in that direction. Fabulously written and we'll performed. I will definitely be recommending this one to friends and family!

Wow.

Leave it to Dave Eggers to deliver a fascinating, chilling tale of a possible near future, that's also very personal.

intrigued but incomplete

The performance is a little lacking. The attempts at character voices are disappointing. Every guy sounds like a doding idiot. Wish this was the full story and not just one chapter.

My kind of horror story

Half way through this chilling story my skin began to crawl. Vampires, zombies and Cthulu have never really done it for me, but this modern tale of true believers in a technologically unlimited world will keep me awake tonight. Eggers engineers a flawlessly incremental slide into smiling, wide-eyed hell, and Dion Graham rings the perfect notes of mindless sincerity to turn your stomach and whiten your knuckles during the ride.

a chilling and interesting book

wao well, it was pretty harmless at the beginning but damn poor may, I mean i understood she worked for a tech company but party points and everything shared? I mean, I understand thats how society is working at rhisbpoint but that you really dont have a choice over that and should do it, was like people really think like that? damn for me it was scary to know that kind of possible train of thought.

overconneted, yikes!

I hope no workplace ever goes that deep into an employee's life and expects them to live and breathe connectivity, even socially. The story irritated me because I didn't think the behavior was appropriate.

Interesting short novel

Gives you something to mull over about current social media views and our tendency to share details. Quick storyline, great narration.

Dion Graham is the Best

I came across this book while strolling through narratives of Dion Graham. he is quite literally the best narrator I have ever had the fortune of listening to because of him I have listened to several different genres of books I wouldn't have otherwise even embarked upon had I not hurt him previously in a different book so that was why I purchase the book on the other hand the book was awesome the writer is amazing and I purchase the circle because of this short story

An infomercial version of a first day of work

The enthusiasm for basic customer service interactions was nauseating. Sorry if that's kinda brutal. I've worked in customer service in some role for 25 years, and I've never had a "WOWEE ZOWEE GEE THIS JOB IS GRAND!" moment, even for the couple of really amazing corporations that employed me. It felt really fake.

3-stars Worth Of Concept

I listened to this title twice before I 'got it'. It's short enough so I did not feel like I wasted time doing so. The price is right. Listen to it sometime on an airflight sometime or long commute.
