Editorial reviews

"Narrator Kevin Kenerly helps, too, especially since a large part of the narrative takes place inside R’s head, detailing his thoughts and feelings in an articulate, lyrical way that he’s unable to express via his extremely limited zombie vocabulary. Kenerly’s somewhat hushed tones draw the listener in right away, when R has yet to meet Julie and is instead just one more anonymous member of the undead, shuffling around an abandoned airport and occasionally venturing into the nearest city to feast on the flesh of the living. R’s musings about the end of the world and what it means to be a zombie have a stark and beautiful immediacy, and Kenerly gives them all the power and reverence they deserve." (Josh Bell)

Publisher's summary

R is a young man with an existential crisis—he is a zombie. He has no memories, no identity, and no pulse, but he has dreams. His ability to connect with the outside world is limited to a few grunted syllables, but his inner life is deep, full of wonder and longing. After experiencing a teenage boy’s memories while consuming his brain, R makes an unexpected choice that begins a tense, awkward, and strangely sweet relationship with the victim’s human girlfriend, Julie.

Julie is a blast of color in the otherwise dreary and gray landscape that surrounds R. His choice to protect her will transform not only R but his fellow Dead and perhaps their whole lifeless world. Scary, funny, and surprisingly poignant, Warm Bodies explores what happens when the cold heart of a zombie is tempted by the warmth of human love.

Critic reviews

“I never thought I could care so passionately for a zombie. This story stayed with me long after I was done reading it.” (Stephenie Meyer, #1 New York Times best-selling author of the Twilight series)

Interesting book. Ending too neat

A great perspective from a zombie. It’s pretty relatable in today’s covid world. Too many things outside of the character’s control and a general feeling of desperation and hopelessness are easy to fall into. I feel a bit sad that the ending could have been more complex but overall a fine story.

Incredible!

What other book might you compare Warm Bodies to and why?

I've never read anything remotely similar.

Which character – as performed by Kevin Kenerly – was your favorite?

R

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It definitely had me laughing!

Any additional comments?

I loved this book!! My most unique read so far, I'd say. I loved R's mind and thinking process. He was so sweet. Isaac Marion did an excellent job. I loved hearing his progression throughout the book.

This was my first Zombie book, so I can't compare it to others. However, I never thought I'd like a book about zombies let alone love one. In my opinion, the ending was just a tad bit weak.

I wholeheartedly recommend listening to this book rather than reading the print edition. The narrator was incredible. You could tell he put a lot of hard work into reading it. I'm sure it wouldn't have been quite the same reading it for myself. Anyways, awesome!

Left me wanting.

If you could sum up Warm Bodies in three words, what would they be?

In three words: Interesting, entertaining, unfinished.

Who was your favorite character and why?

That would have to be the main characters best buddy. A bit raunchy, honest to a fault, and he has a determined loyalty. I like those attributes in people.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Kevin Kenerly?

Probably, but it depends on which kind of story it would be. Needs a bit of work on character development.

If you could take any character from Warm Bodies out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Julie. If she's worth coming back from the dead for there has to be something there right?

Any additional comments?

Overall I thought it was a good story, I just wish there had been a bit more explanation as to how the world, and the main character got the way they were- two very important points that left it feeling a bit unfinished, at least to me.

Narrator put me to sleep.

Good story with a new take on the zombie genre. The narrator was very mono tone and put me to sleep twice. Had to stick with it just to finish. I did enjoy the book but even the few action scenes were meh cause of the flat tone of the reader.

Very well written,imaginitive.. highly recommended

I saw the movie before "listening" to the book. The storyline is slightly different, more personal and intense than the movie. R's character is extremely dynamic and relatable "in the human sense" and even the "zombie" moments that R described were clouded with moral disgust at his own nature. The narrator did a fantastic job capturing every moment, every emotion, with intentional clarity. Though there were transitions that seemed to abruptly switch from reality to vision or dream, the narrator knew how to distinguish between the two in the tone of his voice. Really enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it.

Better than the Movie

I bought this book after watching the movie, and was not disappointing. It was engrossing and fun to listen to, and contained many more details than the movie. the ending was much more realistic as well!

Surprisingly meaningful

This is not the movie. Not by a long shot. Humor, yes. Romance, yes. Gross zombies, of course. But so much more. Read it.
The narration was top notch, too.

love this book!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Sure. It's a great book and the narration is good.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Warm Bodies?

I love the prose and the depth of the story, but some of the most memorable moments happen in the airport with R and Julie.

Which scene was your favorite?

R playing "living" was fun.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

Great experience, wish the narrator had a slightly less resonate voice. It made it hard to understand him sometimes.
