Editorial reviews

"Narrator Kevin Kenerly helps, too, especially since a large part of the narrative takes place inside R’s head, detailing his thoughts and feelings in an articulate, lyrical way that he’s unable to express via his extremely limited zombie vocabulary. Kenerly’s somewhat hushed tones draw the listener in right away, when R has yet to meet Julie and is instead just one more anonymous member of the undead, shuffling around an abandoned airport and occasionally venturing into the nearest city to feast on the flesh of the living. R’s musings about the end of the world and what it means to be a zombie have a stark and beautiful immediacy, and Kenerly gives them all the power and reverence they deserve." (Josh Bell)

Publisher's summary

R is a young man with an existential crisis—he is a zombie. He has no memories, no identity, and no pulse, but he has dreams. His ability to connect with the outside world is limited to a few grunted syllables, but his inner life is deep, full of wonder and longing. After experiencing a teenage boy’s memories while consuming his brain, R makes an unexpected choice that begins a tense, awkward, and strangely sweet relationship with the victim’s human girlfriend, Julie.

Julie is a blast of color in the otherwise dreary and gray landscape that surrounds R. His choice to protect her will transform not only R but his fellow Dead and perhaps their whole lifeless world. Scary, funny, and surprisingly poignant, Warm Bodies explores what happens when the cold heart of a zombie is tempted by the warmth of human love.

Critic reviews

“I never thought I could care so passionately for a zombie. This story stayed with me long after I was done reading it.” (Stephenie Meyer, #1 New York Times best-selling author of the Twilight series)

A different take on the impending zombie apocalyps

Where does Warm Bodies rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Warm bodies is a wonderful book to listen to and the performance is great. Engaging the entire time.

What did you like best about this story?

I am a big zombie enthusiast/survivalist and this is the first hopeful story I have read about the zombie apocalypse. It clearly identifies the inner struggle that many zombies face but also shows that even their greatest trials can be overcome with the right weapon...in this case a brain that infects the main character R with love and questions.

What does Kevin Kenerly bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He helps evoke the emotions felt by R and the tone of this book

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

With love comes life. Even for the undead.

Any additional comments?

This book was really fun and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it.

A joy.

An absolute joy to read. I was at first captured by the performance of the reader and the quality of the writing. Though I am not anyone notable, I am not easily won. This reads as so many classics I have delved.

The zombie story is just a fake storefront for an absolutely wonderful book I will now buy and read while listening to my own voice reading it.

(Hope I didn't over do it),
Wes

Amazing

This review is from a hard core Zombie fan.
I enjoy gory, sadistic, and terror driven zombie and apocalyptic books. I did not think I was going to enjoy this book and put off listening to it for a while. I finally broke down (ran out of Zombie books to listen to) and began to listen. I was amazed, SHOCKED, and totally hooked from the first paragraph to the very last word. I have fallen in love with the characters, even the dead ones. I could not stop listening. I believe this book would make a GREAT blockbuster movie. A MUST LISTEN FOR ALL ZOMBIE FANS!!!!

Every bit as good as the movie

Both the book and the movie are offbeat, funny, and full of memorable characters. I did not expect this take on the zombie apocalypse to be so great. Now I hope the author or other writers continue to write stories in this vein.

My New Favorite Book

What made the experience of listening to Warm Bodies the most enjoyable?

The perspective of a zombie yearning to feel/love in stark contrast (ironic) to humans learning to disregard life/living is absolutely wonderful, cynical, satirical, and - overall - hopeful.

What other book might you compare Warm Bodies to and why?

The only thing I may compare this book to is the Harry Potter series only from the addictive nature is instills in the reader as well as from the free/easy flow of readability.

Which scene was your favorite?

I love all the references to The Beatles, especially, "I don't know why you say Goodbye; I say Hello". That song never made sense to me before.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Nothing 'extreme' other than enjoyment.

Any additional comments?

This book is better than the movie, except in the age of the main character.

Oh R! I love you so much!

What did you love best about Warm Bodies?

My favorite was the way that R used music to explain himself to Julie. It was so moving and beautiful.

What other book might you compare Warm Bodies to and why?

No comparison is available. He wrote this book from the perspective of the zombie and it's amazing.

Have you listened to any of Kevin Kenerly’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to Kevin Kenerly's other books, but would consider it after listening to this one.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I had the whole gamut of reactions to this book. It affected me greatly and even touched my heart. I am a huge fan now.

Refreshing take on Zombie craze

What does Kevin Kenerly bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

There were parts where Kevin was switching characters, but I didn't catch it due to the characters voice being too similar. Not many, but it did stand out to me. Otherwise, very well done.

If you could take any character from Warm Bodies out to dinner, who would it be and why?

R for sure...I would love M to be there for comic relief as well.

Any additional comments?

Really enjoyed the book and finished it in less than three days. Very unique perspective and liked the thought of a cure. Would highly recommend for entertainment. Now off to see the movie.

For those who don't always read zombie books

I'm not a zombie book reader. Many of my friends are and several mocked this book without even reading it. I on the other hand vehemently defended this novel as great fun. Because not all of us have read World War Z or... whatever the other titles of zombie books are, and this book is great for just that reason.

I'll admit I got the book because I saw the trailer for the upcoming movie and was amused. Seems different. Seems funny. And it is. I like this book. The main character has these wonderfully literate thoughts yet can't seem to speak more than a few syllables. We never know why he starts healing other than (and if you have seen the trailers this isn't a spoiler) he falls for a girl because he eats the girl's boyfriend's brains. Why this hasn't happened sooner, who knows, but I enjoyed the ride.

The narrator did a great job. I got the feeling he was a little too old for the part but it didn't bother me too much. All in all it was a wonderful trip into a future where the undead are not appearing, they're disappearing.
