Publisher's summary

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues here in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

These multimillion-copy best sellers are stirringly read by Kevin Pariseau for their first appearance in downloadable audio.

Critic reviews

"Brilliant…. An outstanding novel and at the same time a great work of history…. Wouk has more than recaptured the period; he has given it life." (Henry Kissinger)
"Those who lived through World War II can most fully appreciate the resonances in this uncommonly readable book. But it is clearly meant – and recommended – for those who did not." ( Time)
"Moving, thrilling fiction…. Wouk is a magnificent storyteller." ( Boston Globe)

Breathtaking and tragic

This is a monumental story and truly epic tale framed within the most tragic period of modern human history. Story and narration are at once captivating and heart-breaking.

The best historical fiction book ever written!

Wow the book and all its historical facts are amazing. This book is definitely worth it. But read, “The Winds of War” book first. “War and Remembrance” is the sequel. Both these books are engaging and so well written. Also, the narrator is fantastic. I found myself preferring to listen to this book over any show or YouTube video. If you are interested in World War II and the lives of the people living during that time, this is a must read.

Absolutely the best!

Would you consider the audio edition of War and Remembrance to be better than the print version?

Absolutely, because Kevin brought all the characters to life!

Have you listened to any of Kevin Pariseau’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Kevin is the best reader of all of the books I have listened to. He deserves an award!

If you could take any character from War and Remembrance out to dinner, who would it be and why?

FDR or Aaron Jastrow were the most engaging and intelligent!

Recommended

Learn much about WWII and enjoy an engaging story simultaneously. What could be better? My only criticism is minor: Mr. Pariseau's voice has a pleasing sound, and he does a fine job with diction, pronunciation and accents, but he isn't always conscientious about emphasizing key words in the sentences he's reading. He could do a better job of illuminating meaning. The listener is forced to do a bit of that work for him. Still, I highly recommend this audiobook.

Shaking and inspiring

Would you consider the audio edition of War and Remembrance to be better than the print version?

I simply love audiobooks; however when asked if I consider an audio edition better than the print version, I am at odds to respond. An audio edition has such beautiful and expressive reading by great specialists. They are moving, exhilarating, funny, sarcastic ... and yet a printed version, internally read by our own voice, also has its very personal touching and endearing features.

What was one of the most memorable moments of War and Remembrance?

The final encounter by the-long and painfully separated Natalie and Byron, and their son Louis. Though the scene is not necessarily highlighted in the book and is to some extent plagued with practical details, the built-up suspense and suffering of these people make it so significant and moving that make it one of the most memorable moments in the book.

Which scene was your favorite?

I liked too many scenes to say I had a favorite one. There were extraordinary scenes at the Russian Front, so many romantic scenes with Victor Henry, wonderful feeling around Italian landscape and culture in connection with Aaron Jastrow, hair-rising suspense around Natalie's many attempts at escaping Europe, peculiar Rhoda Henry's many couple and family scenes, ...there is no end to enjoyment.

Who was the most memorable character of War and Remembrance and why?

Victor Henry and Natalie Jastrow are the two main figures in the book, I think. So noble and yet so human in the many facets they have as the rich characters they are. However, other characters are so interesting in their transformation, like Leslie Sloat and Aaron Jastrow, and in their depiction, like Rhoda Henry. Again, it's hard to decide. It takes all kinds to make a world.

Any additional comments?

The historical comments in Winds of War and War and Remembrance are not to be neglected. They provide important context to these two books, a fresco of those hard times.

The doom of Men is that they forget

Between The Winds of War and War and Remembrance we have a Tolstoy in Leon Uris. The Audiobook version brings the sweeping narrative of the Henry family to life over a sweeping vision of the Second World War.
