Publisher's summary

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues here in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

These multimillion-copy best sellers are stirringly read by Kevin Pariseau for their first appearance in downloadable audio.

Critic reviews

"Brilliant…. An outstanding novel and at the same time a great work of history…. Wouk has more than recaptured the period; he has given it life." (Henry Kissinger)
"Those who lived through World War II can most fully appreciate the resonances in this uncommonly readable book. But it is clearly meant – and recommended – for those who did not." ( Time)
"Moving, thrilling fiction…. Wouk is a magnificent storyteller." ( Boston Globe)

An amazing historical piece.

Amazing story and narrator. This is well worth your time if you want to know the truth about WW2 and the philosophy of many people involved. You will not be able to put this down as the story is extremely gripping. 5 stars for all aspects of the book and performance.

Historical fiction blending at its best

This book is a great tool to have an idea of how differing nations rally around unlikely people. It also paints a picture of how devoted soldiers are to that esprit de corps that can be found within groups that have strong leaders.

The best listening experience, ever . . . .

Herman Wouk and Kevin Pariseau are simply an unbeatable combo. They combined to make this the best listening experience I've had in my five years with Audible.

I must add that you need to read Winds of War first, as that is part one of the story/history. I chose to read these books in my ongoing attempt to try to comprehend how a monster such as Hitler could have arisen and caused so much carnage. I shutter to think that if I or my family lived in Europe during his reign, we would likely have been eradicated, too. I previously read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. I hoped that reading Wouk's books would give me a different perspective on how individual lives were affected.

Wouk's characters were wonderfully developed and acted in believable ways. I really cared what happened to them. I enjoyed how he interwove the individual stories, particularly the way he quoted from books purported to be written at the time (Von Roon and Jastro.) While this is considered historical fiction, the historical parts are true to what happened with most of the major players in the war. This is all explained by the author after the ending of the book.

Kevin Pariseau surpassed anything I have experienced from a narrator. I could immediately tell which character was speaking and it seemed, he never slipped up. He added so much to the telling of this story. I never felt the book lagged or slowed down. I savored every moment of this listening experience.

I would highly recommend this book (and Winds of War) to all readers, even if you think a war story is not your cup of tea. I keep hoping that the more we know of our world's history, the less chance we have of repeating our most egregious mistakes.

No Regrets, but a bit Soapy and Long

If you just read the Winds of War, you should read War and Remembrance, but not back to back. I liked Winds of War better than War and Remembrance just because it's a bit too soapy and so long. Good history and after 56 hours, I don't regret that I invested the time. I have to give credit when credit is due. There is closure to the story and no cliff hangers or no ending at all. Very well written on all counts. Maybe the best fictional history war book that I've read thus far. I don't think that I will read the series again, but glad that I read it. The author does justice by going over what was facts and what was made up by his imagination. If it wasn't for Kevin Pariseau's narration, it would been very difficult to get through the book.
