Publisher's summary

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues here in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

These multimillion-copy best sellers are stirringly read by Kevin Pariseau for their first appearance in downloadable audio.

Critic reviews

"Brilliant…. An outstanding novel and at the same time a great work of history…. Wouk has more than recaptured the period; he has given it life." (Henry Kissinger)
"Those who lived through World War II can most fully appreciate the resonances in this uncommonly readable book. But it is clearly meant – and recommended – for those who did not." ( Time)
"Moving, thrilling fiction…. Wouk is a magnificent storyteller." ( Boston Globe)

An awesome Saga of Horor and Hope For the modern age

Both of the authors works on World War II and the Henry family and stand Proudly in the battle line with the finest Michener, Follet, and Umberto Eco. Not for the faint hearted, if dense and rich narration visualization is not your thing, and this is probably not your buck. If you want to revisit what it meant to be an American, a Jew, or a Russian during this pivotal period. Of history, read on...

We must always remember the plight of the Jews

The narrator was wonderful. I will follow this speakerto again!

As for the story, there are no words to discribe the hate and torture the Jews went thru. It has not stopped just took on a different face.

What Hitler did and was should never be forgotten.

Wouk tells it so well, with his discovery of the facts accurately reported in this book, a generation that is almost gone will not be forgotten.

His portrayal and historical facts are like a class in history of days gone by most try to forget but the Jews never forget what the world did.
There are no authors like Wouk anymore.
I read this book 30 yrs ago, and wanted to rehear the story of both books. This is a historical fiction that should be a must read for students everywhere. For all people but there are so many who won't believe this massacre from the Nazis occured, I hear it today, even with all the facts.

A must read. I will cherish these 2 books till I die.
Thank you Mr. Wouk

Best War & Love Story

While not a completely true story of the WWII it still touches on most aspects that were, some of the sadder parts are heart wrenching. The love story is riveting and could have been someone's life.

Magnum Opus

I believe I downloaded this book and its companion, The Winds of War, from a Audible list called "Magnum Opus" or something of that sort. It was no lie. These two books are among the best Audible has to offer.

Herman Wouk must have decided to write his own, American, version of War and Peace, and while not many writers could compete with Tolstoy, he had the chops to pull it off. The novels, simultaneously heartbreaking and inspiring, have everything a reader (or listener) could wish for: historical research, character development, plotting, great themes.

Audible chose wisely in getting Kevin Pariseau to narrate these two books. He not only had to be able to pronounce bits of language and place names from locations around the globe, but also to sing songs representing a variety of cultures. Who can do that? Kevin Pariseau can! There are too many examples of his brilliance to list, so I'll limit myself to just one: I'm thinking of a section in which he had to sing an old song from the twenties as one of the characters reflected on the happier days of her marriage - and somehow he managed to give it the scratchy shaky feel of an old 20s record.

By any measure, these two books and the Audible productions of them are outstanding.

A Classic - Both Books Are Accurate

While it took some time to get through both War And Rememberance and The Winds Of War, it was so well worth the effort. 'Tis not easy to combine so much history into several love stories that kept the reader / listener enthralled. I wish there was a sequel ...

Moving Historical Novel of WWII

The treatment of the Jews made real by the depiction of Natalie and her Uncle's experiences. Better able to follow the time line of what was happening in Europe and the Pacific due to this novel. Keen understanding of people. A glimpse into the anguish this war caused. Narrator superb.

What an amazing window into history, especially a part that changed the world forever.

Herman Wouk created an epic set of novels that provides a window into the historical perspective known to many who lived it and all those who lived shortly after it, as a landmark milestone in human history. The events of these novels including the development of the tools of war and the attitude of people going into war and those denying the existence of the hideous nature of war are fascinating. The fact that this part of history is trying to be swept away as unfortunate as history does repeat itself and many of the events in this epic set of journalistic representation are being addressed in this era now. I’m grateful for the insight that Mr. Wouk gives us to this time and place as I feel like I was there living through it in the way he words his story and the way the narrator Kevin Pariseau provided a walk through those unforgettable times. I love these books, as the truth will set you free!

Winds of War/War and Remembrance

Together, these fact-based novels cover so much history, from pre-WW2 to Hiroshima. The story is inspiring, disturbing and compelling, and provides the human tragedy and heroism we don’t hear about in school. Warnings: the language is racist and the portrayal of women is sexist. This is both an accurate reflection of the period and of the 1970s, when the books were published, but it’s jolting. Descriptions of the Nazi cruelty are vivid and horrible, but must be heard. Together, the narrative takes about 100 hours, and the narrator is amazing- he does accents, male and female voices - different for each character- and he sings! This is a tour de force.
