Publisher's summary

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues here in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

These multimillion-copy best sellers are stirringly read by Kevin Pariseau for their first appearance in downloadable audio.

Critic reviews

"Brilliant…. An outstanding novel and at the same time a great work of history…. Wouk has more than recaptured the period; he has given it life." (Henry Kissinger)
"Those who lived through World War II can most fully appreciate the resonances in this uncommonly readable book. But it is clearly meant – and recommended – for those who did not." ( Time)
"Moving, thrilling fiction…. Wouk is a magnificent storyteller." ( Boston Globe)

Absolutely riviting! Fascinating story.

What did you love best about War and Remembrance?

I love World War II stories and that this one followed different members of one family through the whole thing, and also never let the threads that connected them fray was fascinating. I know it is fiction, but it so closely followed historical facts, it made you feel such a connection to the Henry family.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the mini-series when it was on TV, bought the video and watched it more than once, but this book was the best of all. I am sorry it had to end.

What about Kevin Pariseau’s performance did you like?

I liked Kevin Pariseau's performance of this book because he really was

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I meant to listen to this book as I walked my dog, but I found myself listening to it not only then, but while I did housework, driving, etc. -- I found it hard to put down. But still it took me a couple of weeks to hear it all and I'm sorry it's over.

I did not want the book to end!

What made the experience of listening to War and Remembrance the most enjoyable?

Kevin Pariseau - not only was he exceptional with his accents, but I also enjoyed when he sang. I often forgot that he was doing all of the voices! Phenomenal! Having listened to the story, I have recently purchased the Winds of War DVD. Although this book is fiction, learning the history of World War II was fascinating! I hope the TV miniseries is as fulfilling as the audio version of this book was for me!

What was one of the most memorable moments of War and Remembrance?

Aaron Jastrow's realization of what it truly meant to be Jewish.

Which scene was your favorite?

The 'sermon' that Aaron Jastrow delivered before he left the Jewish ghetto.

If you could rename War and Remembrance, what would you call it?

I would nor could not rename it- the title was appropriate as is.

Any additional comments?

I'm having a hard time trying to find an audiobook that can measure up to The Winds of War and War and Remembrance! Suggestions please!!!! (-:

Amazing

Would you consider the audio edition of War and Remembrance to be better than the print version?

Hearing the characters come to life made this story compelling and addictive.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved learning the history of World War II in details that were unfamiliar to me. This book made me realize that the war was about so much more than I thought it was. Having not lived in that time it helped me to understand the people who did experience the war even better.

What about Kevin Pariseau’s performance did you like?

Kevin Pariseau did a fantastic job bringing these characters to life. I marvel at his ability to keep all the voices and inflections of the characters strait.

If you could take any character from War and Remembrance out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would take Natalie Jastro, her story needs to be told now and forever.

One of the best novels of all time.

A masterpiece by one of America's best authors. Herman Wouk gives us a poignant history lesson disguised as a beautiful novel.

One of the best books ever written

I first read this book and it's prequel over 30 years ago. Many books I've listened to again now feel outdated or just not that good in the first place (I was easily impressed 😁) Not so this book. The saga of the Henry family and the full breadth and scope of WW2 the pages bring to the listener here is every bit as profound, moving and educational as it was the first time I listened to it. THIS is what historical fiction should be. The background needed to understand the situation, the choices and the background and rich characters to bring it alive and give it emotional importance to the reader. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

It would be folly to criticize...

Volume 2 of this Homeric Epic, but if I must find fault with the genius of Herman Wouk, I can say without too great a pang of conscience, that the author seemed to have too much to say. Was this a love story, a war story, a social commentary, a historical review of the war, or his views on the holocaust with all the religious overtones that must come with a Jewish author? Unlike volume one “the winds of war“, this final volume almost became burdensome, and frankly, at times, tedious. Nonetheless it is a monument to his generation and the NARA raider with his ability to mimic the mini accents and voices performed wonderfully.

Excellent historical novel

Loved the historical accuracy even though I hated the holocaust sub plot. Too sad. Performance was excellent with voice inflection and intonation very helpful. Overall it was extremely enjoyable.

Winds / And Remembrance

Having seen both of them on TV and owning both of them on DVD, I thought the books were what I needed to read to better understand the adaptation. Mission accomplished and some of the best reads to date.

Audible books

This book, as well as Winds of War are amazing books, I wish I had read them before.
The tragedy of war and the aftermath are astounding and Herman Wouk is able to show, through his masterful writing, how we are all affected by the loss of lives and the suffering of so many innocent people.
Kevin Parisesu did a masterful job making the story come alive. I am hooked. I will listen to any book that he reads on audible.

The book is truly a masterpiece.
