Zev Hassick is surprised and confused when he finds himself attracted to his best friend. His very human, very male best friend. Zev is the son of the pack Alpha, regarded as the strongest wolf in generations, born to lead. And everyone knows a male shifter has to mate with a female of his own kind to keep his humanity. So shifters can't be gay, right?
Jonah Marvel wants a relationship with Zev, his best friend, the man he has loved since childhood. It wasn't easy to maintain that relationship over years spent living apart while Jonah studied to become a doctor. And then things grow more difficult when Jonah becomes his own patient. Before he can make a life with Zev, he has to understand his past and cure the unexplained ailments that plague him.
Zev and Jonah know they're destined for each other, but they're facing traditions ingrained over generations and long-buried secrets that may threaten any future together.

This book! My goodness. Thank you to all the forces that came together to bring this one to us listeners. It was 7+ hrs of bliss to listen to.
Although there are very solid explanations and twists to the tropes, generally the storyline of this book has nothing new. If you've read the Change of Heart series by Mary Calmes, and/or the With or Without series by Langley, or really any M rated werewolf/human fanfiction, then you know exactly what route the storyline of this novel takes. YET, I have no idea what sorcery Cardeno C. worked, but whatever it was, the author sold me this entire story as though it was brand new. Every single word made my heart ache for these two men. I needed them to be together more than they needed to be. I believed 100% in their love and kept forgetting to breathe, chapter after beautiful chapter.
Charlie David is perfect as the narrator of this book. Perfect. In fact, I will just take a moment to commend him and all the other truly amazing male narrators that we have in this genre; the Method-Readers as they seem to be, who do more than just read the words but truly perform every scene. He did things with his voice that made my heart flutter. He gasped, and laughed, and delivered lines in a sexy, husky, tone that had me swearing out loud and needing air. The way Jonah sounds during certain moments, the voice he uses for Zev that is all Alpha, dear heaven....
Enough said! You're reading this review because you like gay romance, so you will almost certainly love this book. Gorgeous, sexy, angsty, and very, very good. Forget about food and sleep. You won't be needing those, at least not for the next 7 or so hours. Five star, recommended!
The story unfolded very well, though I had figured out that detail about Jonah's mother fairly early on.
When Jonah and Zev finally tied.
I think Charlie David was a great narrator
Zev, he is the ultimate Alpha
I've never really given stories like this a chance which I don't understand why. I love to watch these type of shows, but when it comes to books, I never give them a shot. I was surprised because I was completely invested in the characters and the story.
I really enjoy the world of books! Narration just add layers to that world... don't u think? :)
This was so awesome. I think this is book 2 of the series becase a couple of characters appear, already mated... and I know they have a book of thier own... sooo this has to be book 2. I so hope audible gets book 1...
This was simply awesome.. I love how the story starts a pivotal moment .. then goes back all the way to the beginning... when Zev and Jonah were babies...
I have only ever read/listen to Cardeno C's Home series... and those are hit or miss for me...but this was breathe taking... It was a nonstop listen for me... Simply Awesome...
The smex...!!! OMG!!! was so good.. Surprising for Cardeno C, too... I think I blushed a couple of times... Seriously...
So worth the Credit, Buy or Sale... A must for all m/m romance listeners...
Narration was great... I love Charlie David... I think he could have made a bit more diff between Zev and Jonah's voices but you can still tell the diff... Soooo good. David reads with emotion... so good...
I need my books to stay sane! Love, love, love my book time!!
I love the M/M romance genre. This is by far the best one I have listened to. An added bonus is that it is a paranormal romance. I love paranormal books too so this one hit all of the right buttons for me. You won't regret buying this book. It is AMAZING!!!
I would and will listen to this again and again. I have never really been into m/m romance, but this book was just a AWESOME LOVE STORY! !!
3.75 stars overall. This was a delightful surprise. I say that bc I was not a fan of Cardeno C books (the early ones) but took a chance on this bc 1) I was desperate for a new audio book; and 2) Charlie David was the narrator and I really like him. I enjoyed this shifter story. It was sweet, simple and just enjoyable. No great angst or drama as it was a soul mate thing, but a solid romance. Didn't blow me away but my expectations were pretty low. All in all I thought it was a good story.
As usually, Charlie David does a great job. What he lacks in his diversity of voices (like Sean Crisden has) he makes up for in the pacing of his reading and the emotions he puts into the characters. Plus he just has a great voice.
Wouldn't know, but I did enjoy hearing it.
Well, the sex is insanely erotic - and frequent, which isn't always the case. But it was still a suspenseful story & I actually really wanted to find out what happened.
Their first acknowledgement of their feelings & then their first real honest encounter.
Probably couldn't differentiated between the voices a slight bit more, but only minor complaint. I just had a really hard time having to take breaks from the book, to like, sleep, work, have a life...very engaging, entertaining read.
It's one of the better audiobooks I own and I will probably listen/read it again.
Surprisingly, I liked the story of Zev and Jonah growing together as best friends. I loved all the little moments they had as children, and then as teens, and then as adults. It felt right, although when they finally did sort everything out I was like, "It's about time!" I especially enjoyed that although Zev dominated Jonah, it wasn't done in a way that Jonah was helpless or weak, and that made it perfect.
He did a fantastic job making the characters come to life.
Yes, I'm the type of person that reads most books obsessively.
I really enjoyed this book. If you love romance, sap, and werewolves, you will enjoy it. However, I will caveat that with the fact that this book tells the story of their entire lives, so if you are hoping it will jump into their present day romance you will be disappointed. It wasn't amazing, but it was a really good story and worth the read/listen. Also, it made me cry at one point, so obviously I connected on an emotional level with the characters, which I consider a feat.
Charlie David, maybe. Cardeno C. No.
Kaje Harper does a fantastic M/M Romance werewolf series that I absolutely love!
It was hard to tell because this story was mostly in the main character's head.
I don't like to go all Editor on a published work, but I couldn't get into this story because of the way it was written. A few chapters in, and nothing exciting was happening. See my additional comments for more on my thoughts.
Series/Standalone: book 1 in series
Book Format: audio
HEA/HFN: did not finish so I don't know
Relatable characters: no
Ratio of sex/plot: the first half was equal
Well written/editor needed: editor needed (see thoughts below)
Would I re-read?: no
Personal thoughts: I couldn't get through the first few chapters. This story is all about the main character telling me what happened mostly in the past, rather than showing me what happened. The narrator was good, but even so, the story just wasn't grabbing my attention. I wanted to know what was going on in the present, but just as we'd start to get somewhere the main character would skip back to some other time. I set the audio book down for awhile, and picked it up again last night. I only got frustrated with it rather quickly and put it down again. I'm sorry I couldn't get into this. I love werewolf stories and I really wanted to like this one, but I just couldn't get into it.
I wanted to like the book because of the premise of the story but this really turned me off. I thought both of the main characters are both alpha males yet they don't exude masculinity at all. Their conversations are like two teenage girls, in fact most of the characters in the story talk the same way. It was the usual fangirl story - the main characters are perfect, the sex overrated, the villain arch is just lousy and the dialogue is so monotonous. I like the narrator though, his voice is quite soothing.
"Beautiful and fun, a great m/m shifter love story!"
A well written shifter, m/m love story, with believable characters full of emotion, fun and passion.
I have not read or listened to any other shifter m/m books, therefore I have no comparison but I certainly look forward to the next book in this series that the author has planned. As this has a wonderful story line with strong very likeable characters.
I have not listened to any other work from Charlie David but I felt he truly brought this book to life. He made it easy to distinguish between each of the characters whilst listening, giving them real personalities. I loved the way he chuckled when the characters chuckled he made the humor so real, so much fun to listen too!
The entire book moved me, there are moments of love, loyalty, persistence, fear and sadness. I thoroughly enjoyed following the lives of Zev and Jonah from childhood through to adulthood as their lives and relationship evolved.
This audible book is a must, you wont be left disappointed with Wake Me Up Inside! But you will be left smiling and feeling warm inside!
