Vicksburg is the fifth book in a series of novels spanning the Civil War and describing its effects on one southern family.

In the waning months of 1862, as the Union army advances closer and closer, Cory Brannon must abandon the supply train to undertake a vital mission for Confederate General John Pemberton, the commander in charge of Vicksburg's defenses.

Good Story

I have enjoyed this series thru the first 5 books but have preferred the versions where multiple members of the Brannon family are involved. here we are back to one member - but the book works well. Great story about an aspect of the Civil War that we didn't learn much about in school. The Western theater was every bit as critical as the East and this book provides a better appreciation for this reality.

Outstanding---as were the first 4

All I can say is: 'when will book 6 be ready and available?' Reasoner has personalized the war of northern aggression and shown, dramatically, the effects of war on men, families and a nation.
Hurry up---I know another one is ready to be recorded!!

Romance novel not civil war novel.

This one is more of a romance novel than civil war novel. Didn't really care for this one.

I was disappointed

I am trying to learn all I can about the battle of Vicksburg. The Donald Miller book was good and I listened to the the outstanding civil war series by Jeff Shaara. His books are "fiction" but sometimes fiction is better truth than the basic facts. Shaara teaches history, puts feet on history, so that the times and places and events have context. The story comes alive and the reader/listener comes to know the major makers of history and what and why and how the events unrolled as they did, based on the diaries and documents of the time.

I finished this Reasor book but felt like the story was very weak and unsatisfying. The same was true of the characters.

The book begins telling how a girl whose grandmother was a slave had been sold to a tavern owner who "rented" her out to his customers. She was apparently a nice looking and reasonably intelligent person who had been used in this horrible. degrading manner until she was able to escape. Her owner had caught up to her and the friends she had been traveling with could not help her. The confederate law said that she had to be returned to this awful man and this awful situation. Happily for her in the story she was able to run away with a man who was dim witted, but at least he loved her.

I thought at that point, that the story would describe the cruelty and injustice of the slavery system and how brave, dedicated people strove to defeat it. But no, the whole incident was glossed over and forgotten in the adventures and lovelife of a confederate citizen who fought really hard to rid the country of those terrible Yankee invaders.

The concept of describing the war through confederate eyes was good, but the characters never did come to an understanding of the evil of the system they were dieing to defend. I guess that was the fact of the matter in many cases, but it left me feeling very disappointed.

I guess I have heard worse readers, but I don't remember when. He makes a real effort to give different voices to different people, but most of them sound as dim witted as the lucky dim wit who ran off with the slave girl. Maybe that is his left handed way of presenting the mentality/reality of the good citizens of the south who were defending slavery, but it was still irritating to me.

Secessionist are the best people they just hate

The author apparently seems to think slavery was ok and American democracy is wrong. I find his inclinations pretty much tripe . However they were free 💩

awesome and entertaining book.

I so impressed by this series! I can't wait for moments with it daily. it is so gripping that I find myself making excuses to escape my life to spend more time with the Brennan's as they navigate the Civil war battles and the cities they were fighting to protect.

Next Steps

The story continues from the west part of the civil war. The story was a bit predictable but still entertaining and the saga of Corey and Lucille moves on.
