Publisher's summary

Sophie Katz, bestselling mystery writer and amateur sleuth, has just discovered that Anatoly, her sexy Russian P.I boyfriend of six years is actually married to the daughter of a Russian mafia boss. Devastated by his betrayal, Sophie banishes him from their beautiful San Francisco Victorian home.

Desperate to distract their friend and pull her out of her depression, Dena and Marcus spirit Sophie away to Vegas for a "fun filled weekend" at a Sex Toy Trade Show. But bigger trouble awaits in Vegas. Anatoly is there; his beautiful Russian wife is there; and so is a dead body stuffed into a closet. And to make matters worse someone has gone out of their way to implicate Sophie in the murder. Sophie's completely over her head and when a mysterious man offers her help she's tempted to take it. But who is he and whose side is he on? It's also clear that whoever the bad guy is he would have no problem killing Anatoly, and although she may want to kill him herself, no one else is going to hurt Sophie's man.

Better and Better

The Sophie Katz mysteries gets better and better. In Vows, Vendetta, and a little Black dress, she sets up her latest novel Vanity, Vengeance and a Weekend in Vegas. Davis does a marvelous job threading the ending of one mystery with the beginning of the next. Another strong suite is her continual rounding out of Sophie’s supporting cast. She allows the characters to grow and develop along with the central mystery. This growth started several novels ago and strongly continues.

In this Novel, the story starts innocently as Sophie consoles herself with her friends in Vegas after she and Anatoly split. Finding out he was - is married was too much. And, then the roller coaster ride starts the free fall. The series is great and you should definitely read this. If you haven’t got caught up on the series, you should go back as do so. This novel doesn’t really give anything away from the early novels so you should be pretty safe.

Sophie Katz is a strong central figure. There is a lot to admire, make you laugh and shake your head. The cast of charters work well together and you probably won’t guess what’s going to happen next. If you like the Stephanie Plum, Scarpetta or Pendergast series, this is a great addition to you reading lists. I highly recommend it and there is a hook to the next installment -- but you'll have to read it to find it.

Couldn't finish, MaryAnn just too irritating

I tried to get interested in this book, but just couldn't make it work. The characters didn't appeal to me, and MaryAnn was the absolute straw that broke the camel's back. I think she was supposed to be cute in her absence of mind, but it just irritated the heck out of me every time she opened her mouth.
The main character got off on the wrong foot at the very beginning of the book, by taking the word of a malicious troublemaker, (which she knew her to be a conniving con) then not even listening to the love of her life's side of the story, just immediately kicks him out of the house. I realized it was going to be one of those books, where you stay half mad at how stupid the characters are acting, and just wasn't in the mood to deal with frustration. At any rate, I decided to go to something else.

Light, fun mystery with a hint of romance

STORY (chick lit) - This is the first book I've heard in the Sophie Katz series, even though it's Book #6. I picked it because the summary sounded like it might be clever, which it was, but I still won't be listening to any more of this series. I think there were quite a few unexplained motives, loose ends and conclusions that were hastily reached, but I did enjoy the likeable characters and most of the author's attempts at humor. The characters, including Sophie's ultra-stuffy sister, a gay male friend and an airhead named Maryann, are with Sophie in Vegas. When Sophie finds a dead body in her hotel closet, she finds herself in a mysterious and precarious situation involving her Russian boyfriend, his wife (yes, he's married!) and members of the Russian mob who also happen to be in Vegas at the same time. The mystery is not complicated so you can multitask, but not so simple that you can just listen on autopilot.

Sophie and her friends are in Vegas to enjoy a sex toy trade show, so there's vibrator jokes, mention of a performance called "Puppetry of the Peni$" and other references which I thought were clever and fun. They also drop the F-word occasionally, but I thought it was funny when it was used.

PERFORMANCE - The narrator did a nice job. Her delivery of the humor was effective, and she did several different voices well, including a Russian accent.

OVERALL (Actual rating 3.5) - This story stands alone and comes to a complete conclusion. Besides what I mentioned in the second paragraph above, there is one short, mildly explicit sex scene. Definitely not a book for guys!

Awful!

I have bought all the audiobooks in the Sophie Katz series and I've loved them all except this one. The first 5 books I only bought through Audible. This book, I first bought on Amazon for my kindle because it wasn't available in audio format. I had not been overly impressed with the book, but I thought it was because I really loved Gabra Zackman's performances of all the characters. I just recently purchased and listened to this audiobook, and I couldn't even get more than an hour in before I just shut it off. The problem is the story is very slow and lacks most of the laugh out loud moments I loved. This particular performance by Gabra is equally bad. None of the characters sound right. They all seem to lack the personalities and voice inflections I've gotten used to. The main character, Sophie, just comes off as whiney. It's hard to know if these problems are due to the changes in editing and publication, or if this series has just reached the end. I don't believe I will be buying anymore though.

Enough

the love affair is taking on the characteristics of totally uninteresting -- the set up for the break up sounds like high school -- the mis-information continues and continues. I have liked other books in this series but this wasn't one of them. Overall disappointing.

Cracking up! Another 5 star listen...

I don't know what is better, the amazing Gabra Zackman narrating in her signature "Sophie Katz" voices, seamlessly transferring from character to character without missing a beat...or the whitty dialogue of both the primary story, and the chapter beginning quotes.

This book made me laugh out loud many times and it was a quick, fun listen that kept you guessing on who the villians were all throughout.

Definately recommend! Listen to them all if you haven't already, this one was worth the wait!

More Great Fun

Lots of Sophie and friends humor and wacky detective work. If you're a fan of the series you won't be disappointed. Gabra does a great job and is still one of my favorite narrators. Can't wait until Kyra writes another.

Great story with fabulous characters

What did you love best about Vanity, Vengeance and a Weekend In Vegas?

The setting and story line was good. Sometimes it took a direction I expected then quickly went down a different path. The supporting charactures diversity and insane moves give Sophie something special, makes me want to see what will happen next.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mary Ann is my favorite characture in this book. You will have to listen to find out why.

Have you listened to any of Gabra Zackman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Gabra does well with everything she performs. Following Gabra is how I found Kyra Davis!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! And I did. Not only did I listen to it in one sitting, I plan to listen again in a few days.

Any additional comments?

Great author and narrator! A bad narrator will ruin a book, Gabra is one of the best. Ms. Davis writes a great story every time. I can't wait to read her next work.

Petulant, childish, annoying

This Sophie seems to be a character devolving into selfish, self-centred, petulance. Drama queen who has learned nothing about life and danger and has become more and more distrustful and fueled by a genuine LOVE of lies and deception and self-deception. This Sophie needs to be smacked upside the head...by herself. So annoying and the fact that everyone around her indulges her stupid behaviour...if only Dina / Deena and her sister just intervened and called her out... This Sophie is a disappointment. Whatever editor urged this character direction, smh...you only made Sophie seem absurdly stupid for someone who’s had all the experiences the character has had... 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️

The story continues...

Pretty much like the previous books. Sophie just keeps getting herself in trouble, then saved at the last minute by her friends.
