Editorial reviews

What if Elizabeth Bennet didn’t turn down Mr. Darcy’s initial proposal? How would Mr. Darcy, a man full of pride and love, react? That’s just what Lara S. Ormiston sets out to explore in this reimaging of the classic Jane Austen novel, Pride and Prejudice. With an enchanting delivery from veteran performer, Carmela Corbett, Ormiston’s Unequal Affections is a humorous and touching examination on what happens to Mr. Darcy when he isn’t hit with the necessary humbling refusal of his proposal. Though knowledge of the original story isn’t necessary for this powerful story to resonate, fans of Jane Austen will delight in the alternate look at what could’ve happened to the man from Derbyshire.

Publisher's summary

When Elizabeth Bennet first knew Mr. Darcy, she despised him and was sure he felt the same. Angered by his pride and reserve, influenced by the lies of the charming Mr. Wickham, she never troubled herself to believe he was anything other than the worst of men - until, one day, he unexpectedly proposed.

Mr. Darcy's passionate avowal of love causes Elizabeth to reevaluate everything she thought she knew about him. What she knows is that he is rich, handsome, clever, and very much in love with her. She, on the other hand, is poor, and can expect a future of increasing poverty if she does not marry. The incentives for her to accept him are strong, but she is honest enough to tell him that she does not return his affections. He says he can accept that - but will either of them ever be truly happy in a relationship of unequal affection?

Diverging from Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice at the proposal in the Hunsford parsonage, this story explores the kind of man Darcy is, even before his "proper humbling," and how such a man, so full of pride, so much in love, might have behaved had Elizabeth chosen to accept his original proposal.

Excellent P&P Variation

Having read many variations of this classic story, I appreciate when the author maintains the personalities and eccentricities of the characters from the original. It also allowed new perspectives for actions taken in the main story. The narrator did a wonderful job of portraying everyone in the story, allowing for easy recognition each character.

more psychological than Jane Austen

What did you love best about Unequal Affections?

Beautiful written and beautifully read

What was one of the most memorable moments of Unequal Affections?

When Elizabeth finally realizes she loves Darcy

What does Carmela Corbett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She reads slowly and softly and is very sensitive to every emotion

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it's more than 13 hours long, and I treasured the time I had to listen to an hour or two (late at night when everyone else is sleeping, and the phone aren't ringing).

Any additional comments?

Hope the author keeps writing

lizzy is to weak

did not always like the authers interpetation of how the principal players would react. I have enjoyed many variations of pride and predjuice. I allways reconized the main charecters. they behave out of charecter to me too many times in this story line.

Wonderful Retelling of a Classic

I almost gave up because I *really* disliked the narrator's voice, but I changed the speed to 1.25 and it made all the difference. I'm so glad I didn't give up because I ended up enjoying this book immensely!

Truly extraordinary literary achievement

First
If you are a fan of Jane Austen you have read before many books based on her characters. I personally have read 50+. That is why I feel I can say that this book is an extraordinary achievement. This is truly a book that could have been written by Jane Austen.
This is one of the few Austen based books that is worthy of being part of my library and is by far the best.

This book is well worth the credit...

The only P&P variation that I can read/hear without cringing. Ms. Ormiston, while giving a fresh perspective to the story we all love, painstakingly endeavoured to remain faithful to Jane Austen’s characterisation of Elizabeth and Darcy.
The narrator has a very well measured, melodious voice. Although I’ve read the story many times, I found myself hanging onto her every word. Her voices of Jane, Mr Bingley and Mrs Bennet reminded me very much of the 1995 version of P&P.
It won’t be long before I listen to this story again!
