Publisher's summary

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens - town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing - even murder - to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out.

Featured Article: The Shining—Book vs. Movie

Set in the claustrophobia-inducing snow-covered peaks of an isolated hotel in the middle of the Rockies, The Shining is a classic work of psychological horror that’s just about as chilling as it gets. But it’s so, so much more than your classic story of spirits and a man’s descent into madness—it’s also a tender yet deeply painful meditation on addiction, family, abuse, and redemption. Stanley Kubrick rejected Stephen King's initial treatment of the screenplay, and the author was largely dissatisfied with his novel’s jump to the big screen. So what exactly are the differences between The Shining movie and the novel?

Surfers in Maine

Narrator uses a surfer accent for several of the characters. Strange. Like watching The Californians on SNL.

Not for me.

Wanted so much to like this story. I really like most of King’s works but this one was a huge disappointment.

Epic Book!

FREAKING LOVED THIS BOOK! I have been a fan of Stephen King for years and have listened to many of his books. This has been one of my favorites, if not my favorite. The narrator is fantastic and the book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Highly recommend this book!

One of King’s best, I thought

I don’t know about the ending but overall it is still a great book and ultimately has a very interesting premise to the whole sci-fi aspect that the ending does make very clear and not in an overly moralizing or down our throats kind of way, more like matter-of-factly with enough of a satisfying bent to leave a somewhat hopeful feeling in me after I was done.

Fantastic narration!

Buy a hard copy, save yourself from this narrator

This is my first review on any platform. The narrator for this book is...well. just awful. I liked the story so much i purchased a physical copy just so I wouldn't have to listen to this terrible narrator.

Decent book, action packed, but lacking.

I believe this book proves a few things about King. For one, he doesn't know anything about guns, gun shot wounds, or ballistics at all.

Another, it shows he doesn't really know much about Republicans or the way they think, talk, and act. Barbie told Julia she wasn't sounding like much of a Republican, but what does a Republican sound like? You can't be critical of other politically like minded people as a Republican? Ridiculous.

Thirdly, I believe King has no clue how teenagers of the era actually talked. No teen in the late 2000s said gnarly, radical, or groovy. Soul brother? That sounds like something my dad would've said to try to sound cool and young.

Lastly, and most importantly, this book shows the problem King has the most, and that's ending a novel. I've been a fan of King for years, decades even, and the one consistent thing I've noticed is his inability to wrap up a story.

Don't get me wrong, I know I've been pretty critical in this review, but I really did enjoy the book. The story was great and left me wanting more of the story. King is very talented and a legend of his time. If you enjoy his work then you'll certainly enjoy this one too.
