Publisher's summary

They're out there....
Waiting. Watching. Unseen by normal eyes, but all too visible to Slim MacKenzie, a young man blessed - or cursed - by Twilight Eyes.

They're out there....
Lurking in the darkest shadows of an eerie, moonlit carnival. Feeding their twisted needs with human suffering - and fiendishly plotting the downfall of the human race.

They're out there....
But don't scream. They'll hear you.

Highly Entertaining

My wife and I spend countless hours on the road. Dean Koontz almost always delivers. This particular book is one of those occasions where he gets it right. There are some mature chapters in the book so younger listeners may be discouraged but I would say this is a gripping tale from his earlier days and it will keep you up while pulling and all nighter.

Odd Thomas original

If you like Mr. Koontz' Odd Thomas series, you will like this. Without doubt this book served as the authors inspiration for Odd Thomas. Certainly the Odd Thomas series has received more attention and is more popular. Nonetheless, there is no doubt this is similar.

The narrator is excellent and enjoyable. I would recommend reading this while awaiting for the next in the Odd Thomas series.

Roller Coaster Ride!

Wow what a good Book!
The books starts out interesting but a little slow. It is kind of like how the cars on a roller coaster are pulled slowly up the first big hill.

The last two thirds of the book is a total horror ride!

The story takes place on the east coast (USA) in 1963-1964. The book was first published in 1985

YOU TRAVEL LIGHT WHEN YOU ARE WANTED FOR MURDER

I FELT UNMASKED, UNCLOTHED, NAKED
A lot of similarities in this with Odd Thomas. The goblins feed on fear and bad vibes. Had Koontz just wrote this story it could have been great. Instead he tried to be Fitzgerald or some classic writer. He is very descriptive and everything is described in three different ways. The love scene might make you gag. I stayed with it for almost eleven hours, cause I wanted to know how the story ended or the problem was solved. When part 2 started and Koontz got even more flowery, I could not stand it anymore. This is early Koontz and in my opinion all early Koontz should be avoided, while later Koontz should be treasured.

Twilight eyes

Nice and creepy, like only Koontz can be. Couldn't stop listening to it. I really liked the characters. Might have to revisit this one. J.

"Eye" say Read This Book!

Once again a knock out punch from Koontz! This sort of was along the lines of Water for Elephants, well in is Dean Koontz sort of way. It is really good!

Not bad I guess..

When I held this book in my hands and slowly read it years ago I loved it, as far as I can remember anyway. Now, years later having it read to me by someone else audiobook style, I found it a little disappointing. Right when the story and characters really begin to come alive, Dean Koontz kills it abruptly. He probably noticed that he hit the minimum pages required to publish and just ran out the door with it. Sad, it needed a big second act part that just didn't happen..
Anyway, 3 stars, main character is in his late teens, young the whole story and the audiobook sounds like my grandfather was reading it to me, weird and not a good fit. If you want a great Koontz audiobook, go with;
1.) Watchers 2.) Lightning 3.) Intensity 4.) One Door away From Heaven 5.) Life Expectancy was also pretty good, so Good Luck!

challenging to read

this is the first Koontz story that I did not love. the navigation of the story was not as entertaining or engaging as others that I have heard. the main character, Slim, it's supposed to be 17 years old and yet the Navigators voice belonged to a character much older. The language that was used and the terminology was unbelievable for me for characters that age. I am old enough to remember what we used to talk like back in the 60s, and as teenagers, we would never express ourselves the way these characters did. Just a bit too refined and intellectual, no matter how old the characters may have felt. therefore, it was not convincing for me. Additionally, I think that there was too much descriptive writing which made it more laborious to get through. the storyline was unique oh, and I did enjoy that.

Not one of his better

I am a Koontz fan and have a dozen of his books in audio form. I can't tell if he was going for penny novel atmosphere or it was written in 1987 when he was not very good but I found it long, predictable and boring. Do yourself a favor and pass on this one.
