Publisher's summary

Keith Stewart, a retiring and ingenious engineer, could not have been happier in his little house in the shabby London suburb of Ealing. There he invented the mini-motor, the six-volt generator, and the tiny Congreve clock. Then a chain of events sweeps him into deep waters and leads him to his happiest discovery yet.

What a treat...

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, definitely. This was just a really great story that kept me entertained throughout the book.

What other book might you compare Trustee from the Toolroom to and why?

It's A Wonderful Life - Keith Stewart has a little George Bailey in him. He is a bigger man than he gives himself credit for.

Have you listened to any of Frank Muller’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't heard this narrator until now. He did a wonderful job with all the accents and different personalities.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Keith's admirers reach out to make sure he is OK.

Any additional comments?

They don't write them like that anymore.

So very special!

As I explore Nevil Shute's writings, I am often struck by the wonderful stories with people that I care about, and I smile. This book was warm and simple in some ways, and also profound in the basic humanity it contains. The narration by Frank Muller was excellent.

Charming story of human connections

Would you consider the audio edition of Trustee from the Toolroom to be better than the print version?

Yes, Frank Muller is one of the all-time great narrators. I especially liked how he voiced Jack, the self-taught sailor, making him seem like a real person, when he could have seemed just a stereotype.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Trustee from the Toolroom?

There were several times when it turned out Keith wasn't such a nobody as he thought he was. This book is about the "six degrees of separation" and how all around the world we are more alike than different.

Have you listened to any of Frank Muller’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Frank Muller is always outstanding. It was a shame that he died early from an accident,

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It took me a few chapters to get into it but then I was engrossed, even though I know nothing about engineering or sailing.

Any additional comments?

Something I would never have picked up on a bookshelf. I don't remember how I got it on Audible, maybe some kind of special. It's always great to find a surprise like this.

Frank Muller is the best and this is Nevil’s best book

I’ve listened to this book probably 10 times now, it’s my go to when I’m not sure what else I want to listen to. I love the character development of Keith, the hilarious ancillary characters and the extremely satisfactory ending. It’s sad to think this was Nevil Shute’s last book, but I really think it was his best.
