Publisher's Summary

Once upon a time, not too long ago, a young girl from the projects met Quadir, far from home, in the middle of Harlem. Now the story is told of how it all went down.

It’s the late 1980s, and Gena finds herself in true-blue love with Quadir, a millionaire associated with the cartel. Quadir is faced with combating the art of extortion and interception masterminded by the notorious Junior Mafia, which reigns from the inner-city streets of Philadelphia. Both Gena and Quadir find themselves caught up in the vicious yet seductive world of drugs and money, only to find that success in this game is no easy win. True to the Game represents life on the streets and is like no other story of its time.

There’s no way out once you’re in, and everyone stays in forever … True.

Teri Woods is a native of Philadelphia where she worked as a legal secretary/paralegal for eight years. She started writing True to the Game in 1993 and began submitting it to publishers in 1994. After being turned down, the book sat dormant for several years. In 1998 she began selling handmade books on the street and out of the trunk of her car. Soon she started her own publishing and production company, Meow Meow Productions, now called Teri Woods Publishing.

    "It was cool"

I like hearing stories about the streets, this was a good story but had too many disconnected moving parts, the characters were not properly introduced, but the story line is strong. So strong that I will read the next book!

    "Pass on this"

This audiobook had sound effects, which was a pleasant surprise, but a few gunshots and tire squeals can't make a bad book good. There were far too many characters, which made it hard to remember who was who. The story dragged on needlessly with one shooting and expensive gift after another one. Usually, I'm a sucker for a trilogy, but I'll pass on this one.

    "I LIKED IT"

I really liked this book. The ending had me anxious to get to book 2. But the next 2 books should be free because they do not meet the standards of book 1.

    "Love it"
Where does True to the Game rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of my all time favorites

Who was your favorite character and why?

Quadir. He just reminds me of the definition of a "good hustler". The one that tries to take care of other even though he doesn t have the best "career"

What does Cary Hite bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think I enjoyed reading this book myself. Cary Hite does do a good variety of voices for the characters buuuttt there were too many characters and some just sounded anoying!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES!! I almost did but I had to leave work and take care of my family!!

    Any additional comments?

Great read.Gives that feel of NY in th 1980s-1990s. A time when things were different and a time that lead to a lot of the issues we have now.

"too many characters in the story!"

the overall plot was good just to many characters I couldn't remember who was doing! if the author maybe had only 5 main characters that would have been great but I believe there were over 20 different people in the story so the story line was all over the place I purchased book 2 hopefully that's better if not I will be requesting a refund!
