The second book in the delightful Barton-In-The-Dale series which began with The Little Village School.
Elisabeth Devine certainly rocked the boat when she arrived in Barton-in-the-Dale to take over as head teacher of the little primary school. Now it's a new term, and after winning over the wary locals, she can finally settle in to her role. Or so she thinks... For the school is hit by a brand-new bombshell: it's to be merged with its arch rival, and Elisabeth has to fight for the headship with Urebank's ruthless and calculating headmaster.
She has her work cut out for her. But add in some gossip and a helping of scandal, not to mention various newcomers bringing good things and bad to Barton, and that's not the only trouble that's brewing in the village.

"laugh out loud funny"
I love the books and audio edition but I enjoy drifting of to sleep with a really good book being read to me
The funniest part for me is Chardony telling the talr of her sister giving birth i have to listen to it at least once a day
He draws you into the story you feel you are part of the tale and can picture everyone he talks about
when Elizabeth goes to see her son and talks to him telling him she wouldn't change him for a normal child, whatever normal is I had a good cry at that,
I cant get enough of his books and am desperate to go and see him in person
"Gervaise Phinn at his best"
the story draws you in and you want to keep listening to the end, the characters build and you grow to love or hate them and a really good feel listen.
The way relationships build and characters are allowed to drop in and out of the story
Listening to Gervase reading the book makes it so good to listen to he brings the characters to life.
Sunday evening viewing as it used to be
If you like Gervase Phinn's humour and down to earth books you will love this book, please realise this is the second book of a three book series. I very rarely buy the next book straight away to listen to the following up story but I did on this occasion, finished this book on Sunday and bought book 3 to start on the Monday.
"Lovely heart warming and fun"
It's no thriller, but its a darn good listen
Danny, why not
I enjoyed the voices, he totally understands the characters
Gervase Phinn is fun to listen to, I do feel that his books are getting a bit 'same - ey' now though. Pleasant to listen to in between tense crime etc.
"Entertaining and well read"
Gervase Phinn always gives an excellent performance to his books. There sometimes seems top be a slight change in some of the voices he uses for a character or two between book, but you soon forget that. Makes an entertaining story come to life.
Always a shame when you reach the end, want the story to continue.
Badly written and badly narrated. Very predictable story.
Possibly one of his non fiction efforts.
Wonderful in every way! I really enjoyed this book and am enjoying this series. I highly recommend this. It will make you laugh and cry x
I love these books. I listened to Gervase' other books like Through the Dales and over the Hill. All very funny and gentle stories. I am certainly going purchase more of his books. Excellent.
As always most enjoyable with interesting characters, not my first book by Gervase Phinn all of which I have enjoyed either listening to or read.
I love this sirese. I find myself chuckling through it in some places and emotional the next.
