Publisher's summary

In To the Far Blue Mountains, Louis L’Amour weaves the unforgettable tale of a man who, after returning to his homeland, discovers that finding his way back to America may be impossible.

Barnabas Sackett was leaving England to make his fortune in the New World. But as he settled his affairs, he learned that a royal warrant had been sworn out against him and that men were searching for him in every port. At issue were some rare gold coins Sackett had sold to finance his first trip to the Americas - coins believed to be part of a great treasure lost by King John years before.

Believing that Sackett possesses the rest of the treasure, Queen Bess will stop at nothing to find him. If he’s caught, not only will his dream of a life in America be lost, but he will be brutally tortured and put to death on the gallows.

real literature

I absolutely loved this story. A good tale without all the modern garbage that seems so hard to get rid of.

Long time favourite

I’m a long time fan of Louis L’Amour, revisiting his world time and time again. The story of a family growing up in the beginnings of western civilization of the Americas. L’Amour has a power with words, a poetry not often matched. I knew what happens, I knew the ending, and listening to this, I sobbed at the last scene, the last lines. I have no words.

Truly entertaining and enthralling.

I believe the words both as written and spoken made the experience real. The principles were worth communicating and passing on. Totally fulfilling time spent.

An American Classic

One of my favorite novels. Louis L'amour was truly an artist of written word. Highly recommend this and his many other titles.

It’s not a western.

Higher brow readers often over look Louis LAmour and think of a long shelf of dusty short paperbacks with cheesy titles and stereotypical artwork owned by some rough, less educated, hard labor working older relative who one wouldn’t think would own any novels at all. But LAmour deserves more credit than he gets… it’s not all John Wayne macho masculine propaganda, I swear. This book and it’s prequel “Sacketts Land” provide insight into a period of history we rarely get to see. I would go so far as to compare them to Ken Folletts Kingsbridge books for someone interested in trying to understand humanity in the late Middle Ages. And like Folletts work found elsewhere on audible it’s performed fantastically. The narrators accent and dramatic inflection bring the characters to life. PLEASE don’t typecast all of LAMours works into the same 10 gallon hat as “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”… to do so would be truly selling oneself short.

Sackett's are my favorites

Great story of those first settlers in the US. Before Jamestown.
I wish Louis L'Amour had finished all 40 of his Sackett, Chantry and Talan story's. He weaves them together so beautifully.
I wish they could be made into movies or a TV series like 1883.
So much wisdom to be learned, if you pay attention.
