Publisher's summary

What if...

Instead of disappearing from Elizabeth Bennet's life after she refused his offer of marriage, Mr. Darcy had stayed and tried to change her mind?

What if...

Lizzy, as she gets to know Darcy, finds him undeniably attractive and her impulses win out over her sense of propriety?

What if...

Madly in love and mutually on fire, their passion anticipates their wedding?

In To Conquer Mr. Darcy, instead of avoiding Elizabeth after his ill-fated marriage proposal, Mr. Darcy follows her back to Hertfordshire to prove to her he is a changed man and worthy of her love. And little by little, Elizabeth begins to find the man she thought she despised, irresistible....

only thing is sex in this story

couldn't tell the difference between some characters voices. Male and female alike. only change in the timeliness is that Darcy and Elizabeth couldn't refrain sexually and had to marry. Elizabeth wasn't very mature. Had temper tantrums. wouldn't recommend.

Not enough new material here...

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I am a fan of Jane Austen novels, and saw several versions of Pride and Prejudice, including the BBC 6-hour series which I thought was outstanding. This book did a good job of telling more of Mr. Darcy's story in an alternate circumstance, but much of the book was just a regurgitation of the original work. I thought that if Darcy and Elizabeth's story changed, then some of the other story line should change as well. I was disappointed.

Any additional comments?

The narrator was slightly better than fair. T he story was good, although not much new informaiton from the original work. So, if you've seen or read the original, there is very little new in this version. If I had to do it again I wouldn't give this a listen. However, if you've never read or seen the original, this story would be good. Not as it was originally written, but still good.

Hard to top the original.

Author must be a young Abigail Reynold

This was not a good Pride and Prejudice variation. The main reason I absolutely love Jane Austen's P&P is the vivid and wonderful characters. None of the characters in To Conquer Mr. Darcy are consistent with Austen's P&P. Elizabeth is a smart mouth woman who can only argue and throw out one liner insults and remarks. She and Mr. Darcy do not have good chemistry despite the fact that the author says they do. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy would never have sex prior to marriage. The acceptance of their fooling around is not as shocking to her relatives as it would have been in that time.
I did not like the narrator very much. I am returning this book.

ZZZZZZZZ

Would you try another book from Abigail Reynolds and/or Elizabeth Klett?

No. I kept expecting this book to get better, after seeing the other reviews, but it just isn't happening. I should be near the split to the second half of this book, and I just can't force myself to waste the time on it.

Has To Conquer Mr. Darcy turned you off from other books in this genre?

yes

What didn’t you like about Elizabeth Klett’s performance?

Reserving judgement on whether it was her performance or just the material I didn't care for.

What character would you cut from To Conquer Mr. Darcy?

all of them

Any additional comments?

Enough said.

Least favorite variation.

I couldn’t endure the book until the end. 95% of story is kissing, sex, seduction between Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth. There is very little, if any, development of characters. The narrator is excellent but didn’t have much of a story to tell. It pains me to leave such a negative review. I must have 75 variations on Pride and Prejudice and some are better than others but this one gets boring with repetitive descriptions of sexual scenes. The story takes great departure from “reality” of Jane Austen’s favorite characters.

“To Conquer Miss Bennet” would have been a more fitting title.

This book demonstrates a very thin line between showing love or gaining one’s love in a healthy way and just plain manipulation. I think Aunt Gardiner had it right when she expressed her concerns. I think the reader may be manipulated into thinking the excessive desecrate encounters shows ODCs love, when in fact it just demonstrates my point of how Darcy found a way to manipulate Elizabeth. Then once he takes from her something that can’t be given back, she thinks she has no choice but to marry him. She was wrong. Why when she was alone did she feel remorse and question her choices? But when he was with her, she didn’t? She should have listened to her gut and run!
