Publisher's summary

Just when it appears that all her hard work on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign is about to pay off with a White House job, 35-year-old Ida B. Wells Dunbar finds herself on Washington, DC’s post-election sidelines even as her 20something counterparts overrun the West Wing. Adding to her woes, her father, the Reverend Horace A. Dunbar, Atlanta civil rights icon, is notoriously featured on an endlessly replayed YouTube clip in which his pronouncements don’t exactly jibe with the new era in American politics. The Rev’s stinging words and myopic views don’t sound anything like the man who raised Ida.

When friends call to express their concern, Ida realizes it’s time to head home and see for herself what’s going on. Back in her old West End neighborhood, Ida runs into childhood friend and smooth political operator Wes Harper, also in town to pay a visit to the Reverend Dunbar, his mentor. While Ida and the Rev try to find the balance between personal loyalties and political realities, they must do some serious soul searching in order to get things back on track before Wes permanently derails their best laid plans.

I love Cleage, but this book was just ok.

If you’ve listened to books by Pearl Cleage before, how does this one compare?

The story-line was alittle weak compared to her other books.

What does Bahni Turpin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

In my opinion, Bahni Turpin is THE BEST reader out there! That's mainly why I wanted to listen to the book.

History being told from it roots

I am so very pleased to have read this book. Awesome author and such history in an area I am so familiar with as I was educated in the A U Center area of college. I will read this author's work again and again!

Not my favorite

I expected a bit more from Pearl Cage. This book was good but I wanted great, the story line was just really simple and the plot twist was not enough of a twist, if that makes sense

Predictable

I enjoyed the story line and the development of characters even though the ending was somewhat predictable and also uneventful.. However it kept my listening ear from beginning to end.

Great Story

Great story. I love the way the fictional characters incorporated important people and black history events in the story.

You won't regret it.

I already like Pearl Cleage, but what really pushed it over the edge and encouraged me to get the book was Bahni Turpin as the reader. a fantastic combo. I was so invested in the characters of this book, my eyes welled up at the end when...well, I won't tell you, you'll just have to listen/read.

This author never ceases to amaze me. All her books are interesting, well written and keeps your attention until the end. At this point I feel like I actually live in West End.

A Pearl Cleage fan for LIFE!

I loved this story, as I’ve loved all Pearl Cleage’s stories! Characters were can relate to. Narrative we don’t need a dictionary and Ph.D. to decipher. Just a great, down to earth, connect with the reader, kinda read that left me clapping at the end!!
