Pirate fever sweeps through the town after an opportunistic treasure hunter shows up looking to lay claim to Blackbeard's lost gold buried somewhere in Tupelo Landing. When the (probably) world-famous Desperado Detectives - Mo and Dale and Harm - are hired by Mayor Little's mother to find the pirate loot for her, and the high-stakes race for riches is on! The Vanderbeekers have always lived in the brownstone on 141st Street. It's practically another member of the family. So when their reclusive, curmudgeonly landlord decides not to renew their lease, the five siblings have 11 days to do whatever it takes to stay in their beloved home and convince the dreaded Beiderman just how wonderful they are. And all is fair in love and war when it comes to keeping their home. A modern classic in the making reminiscent of the Penderwicks series.

Publisher's summary
A hilarious Southern debut with the kind of characters you meet once in a lifetime.
Rising sixth grader Miss Moses LoBeau lives in the small town of Tupelo Landing, NC, where everyone's business is fair game and no secret is sacred. She washed ashore in a hurricane eleven years ago, and she's been making waves ever since. Although Mo hopes someday to find her "upstream mother," she's found a home with the Colonel--a café owner with a forgotten past of his own--and Miss Lana, the fabulous café hostess. She will protect those she loves with every bit of her strong will and tough attitude. So when a lawman comes to town asking about a murder, Mo and her best friend, Dale Earnhardt Johnson III, set out to uncover the truth in hopes of saving the only family Mo has ever known.
Full of wisdom, humor, and grit, this timeless yarn will melt the heart of even the sternest Yankee.
Critic reviews
"What do you get when you combine Because of Winn-Dixie's heart with the mystery and action of Holes?...a wickedly awesome tale of an 11-year-old girl with more spirit and gumption than folks twice her age. Mo LoBeau is destined to become a standout character in children's fiction." (Kirkus, starred review)
"Here is a writer who has never met a metaphor or simile she couldn't put to good use...But it's Mo's wry humor that makes this first novel completely memorable." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)
"Turnage's lively novel features a distinctive voice and a community of idiosyncratic characters." (Booklist, starred review)

When hardworking attorney Clare Westbrook learns that her ambulance-chasing boss has been murdered, she's shocked - but not exactly surprised. Harvey Kredd was known for his less-than-ethical business dealings, and even his acts of generosity were tinged with greed. Enjoyable for the whole family!
So much fun and the kids were using the accent for weeks. The mystery kept us guessing and attentive the entire time. We will definitely check out the other books in the series because we love the characters.

Among my favorite MGlit audiobooks ever
Just completed a relisten to THREE TIMES LUCKY for the first time since hearing it back when the book first was published. The story and narration remain fantastic and attention-grabbing. Turnage does a spectacular job of bringing her characters and setting to life!
