"Ruby Dee does an excellent job of narrating Hurston's classic 1937 novel." (Library Journal)
"This audio succeeds in its rich descriptions and freshness of dialogue, delivering in terms that are alternately funny and moving." (Publishers Weekly)
Incredibly beautiful language!
When Nannie says "Put me down easy, Janie, I'm a cracked plate.”
The opening scene, when Janie walks thru town and past all the gossipers.
Beautiful language and amazing performance!
Brief, but poignant. Really worth hearing, although occasionally a little hard to understand the accents, for us northerners. This is already heading towards being considered a classic. An ideal audio selection.
I personally loved the book. The story line was quite interesting and though it was nonfiction, the author brought the story to life in such a way that it very well could have been someone's real life story . very believable for the people who lived in that era and struggle. loved it!
I was so captured by the brilliant way this author transported me to the life and speech of a population if Blacks from a forgotten past. The story, however, is relatable to any age...that of love and loss.
I love to read! I love many genres.
Yes I would recommend this book to a friend because it is so well written. It is an excellent read. The way the author captures the dialect of the characters is captivating.
I loved the realness of the love story.
Ruby Dee was an excellent narrator. I have never listened to her other performances. I quickly looked up her bio to see if she had narrated any other books. I loved her style.
The part that moved me the most was when the main character (I don't want to give it all away) sat with her friend and ended her story but comforted herself by the fact that she had found what she needed even though she lost it. A true story of better to have loved and lost than never have loved at all. Excellent read!
This was one of my favorite books in high school, and one of the best women's memoirs ever. Inspired me all my life as a writer and writing teacher. To hear Ruby Dee was like going to a great stage performance. I envy her, I wish I could read it outloud myself! This is just a very, very special book by a kind of person you never hear from otherwise.
THIS RECORDING DOES NOT FOLLOW THE BOOK!! it skips around a lot and does not follow what is written in the book
