Publisher's summary

Their Eyes Were Watching God, an American classic, is the luminous and haunting novel about Janie Crawford, a Southern Black woman in the 1930s, whose journey from a free-spirited girl to a woman of independence and substance has inspired writers and readers for close to 70 years.

This poetic, graceful love story, rooted in Black folk traditions and steeped in mythic realism, celebrates boldly and brilliantly African-American culture and heritage. And in a powerful, mesmerizing narrative, it pays quiet tribute to a Black woman who, though constricted by the times, still demanded to be heard.

Originally published in 1937 and long out of print, the book was reissued in 1975 and nearly three decades later Their Eyes Were Watching God is considered a seminal novel in American fiction.

Featured Article: Classic Literature from Black Writers, Performed by Black Narrators

Despite the many great works of literature by great Black writers, Black voices have had a hard time entering "the canon." Worse, there have been times when Black words were miscast and read by narrators who didn't connect with the spirit of the authors. To help rectify this, we offer our careful selection of classics by Black authors performed by gifted Black actors that truly deserve to be recognized, celebrated, and savored.

I am so glad I didn't return the book. The first chapter was hard to understand because of the dialect but it became such a great story. The performance was incredible! I am glad i have this book to listen to again! # blackhistory lifelessons lovestory

What’s me gon do now

Soooooo, Good. Not just an epic tale, but insight into life in the South for African Americans at that time. I can’t even begin to say (without giving things away) how good the story is. EXCELLENT.

Well Executed Narration

What did you love best about Their Eyes Were Watching God?

Their Eyes Were Watching God gives the reader a glimpse into the life of Janie, an oppressed black woman living in the early 20th century in the Florida area.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tea Cake was my favorite character due to his charming and cunning nature.

What does Ruby Dee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ruby Dee captures several different voices and brings it together in a cohesive manner. This can be very helpful considering that the slang in the novel is not meant to be read in a monotone voice.

If you could take any character from Their Eyes Were Watching God out to dinner, who would it be and why?

If I could take any character from this novel out to dinner I would take Janie because she is reciting this whole story to Phoebe the entire time and therefore I feel that should would make a great conversationalist.

Any additional comments?

Excellent narration, enjoyable story line. Read a paperback version the first two times, but the audiobook was my favorite read.
