When three South Yorkshire friends picnic on top of an ancient fertility symbol, who could have known that within four months they would all have their own eggs fertilised!
For Helen, pregnancy is a dream come true. But the more the baby grows inside her, the more she can see her outwardly perfect marriage crumbling.
For career-woman Janey, it is a nightmare. How could it have happened? She and her husband George, ecstatic at the prospect of being a dad, were always so careful over contraception.
And the emotionally lost Elizabeth is not only carrying a child she fears she will never love, but she must also deal with the return of a man whose love she can never have.

Loved every second of this book! Will be one that I revisit often. It will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you cringe (sp?) in some places, but to me that is what makes a book great! The emotion you feel and the bonds you form with the characters. I see a little of myself in each of the leading ladies, which, for me, makes the book so much fun to read. Give it a shot, I'm sure you'll love it!
I loved this book! The narration is stellar! The characters, with all their flaws, are captivating and the path the story takes is sooo satisfying!
It was definitely a chick read, but I enjoyed it. Parts were quite predictable, but that did not really bother me. I wanted a "lighter" read and that is what I got! I would recommend it and read more of her books.
Addicted to audiobooks and "chick lit"
As a single non-pregnant woman without children, I was unsure if I would enjoy this book. But I thoroughly did. Even though the cover is emblazoned with 3 pacifiers, this book is really about friendships and relationships. Milly Johnson writes in such an honest yet positive way. Colleen Prendergast gave a good performance but, at times, I found her to speak too fast. Maybe my slow, southern US ears were to blame.
All in all, a must read! :)
"The Yorkshire Pudding Club'. In this fun, warm and interesting novel, three 30-something women from South Yorkshire, who have been friends since school, fall pregnant at the same time and all in very different circumstances. Johnson manages to tell their stories in such a way that you can't help but root for each one of them. They all have past and current issues, ranging from child abuse and bullying to infidelity. Johnson deals with these sensitively and compassionately whilst not undermining their complexity. Something Johnson is VERY good at is creating male characters so slimy, so manipulative, so despicable, that you just want to climb into the book and kick them in the nether regions. However, she balances this well with a 'cracking' sense of humour (as they say in South Yorkshire) that saves 'The Yorkshire Pudding Club' from becoming an indulgence into the dark and depressing and rather maintains its persona of a funny, enjoyable read. This isn't to say that Johnson skimps on the consequences of each of the character's pasts. Each of them has to live with the effects of what has happened and challenge those behaviours that have become ingrained as a result.
Johnson's intelligent and down-to-earth 'chick-lit' is a welcome break of irreverent escapism whilst presenting the reader with emotionally complicated undertones. She also enforces the novel idea that women can look nice with a bit of meat on them. So next time you find yourself worrying about how many calories there are in a kit kat, stuff it and eat 10.
It's up there with the best for entertainment
This is well worth the listen. You will find yourself thinking about the characters as you drive to work and trying to predict the outcome. Most enjoyable.
I liked the flow of this book. When I read the description, I wasn't too wowed, but it surprised me. Not all about babies but relationships and romantic life.
I love to be entertained when I 'read'. I love a broad range of books including fiction and occasional scandalous chick-lit.
I would listen to the Yorkshire Pudding Club again- I feel like it's similar to a good movie and you would catch many things the second time that you missed the first time.
This book is about so much more than 3 pregnant ladies - if you like chick lit, you will love this.
Loved this book. Listened to it in 2 days and couldn't stop! Great character development and sweet and heartfelt end! I would highly recommend!
Also I love Colleen Prendergast as a reader. What a lovely voice she has.
Yes. It was a funny way to look at pregnancy through the eyes of 4 different people.
My only comment is I wish the author would have gone into detail about the other 3 births like she did on the first, not just give the final details. The first was so funny it was a bit of a let down not to be able to have the same enjoyment with the others.
"A happy tale with northern grace and humour"
Expecting a baby myself, I turned to this book for a light listen and perhaps some fictional education - to be honest the more baby books I read, the more I realise everyone's experience is so different, that I may as well read fiction! It didn't disappoint, and I would recommend it as a happy beach listen. The 3 main character's stories were honest and had some depth, and their plots weaved on fairly predictably but with northern brash charm, humour and some great 'Go Girl!' moments, so none the worse for it.
The end did actually have me welling up - though in my state that's not strange, but I suspect I would have anyway. This is definitely one for the girls, and has a happy balance of pathos, humour and some heart melting moments.
I am now on my second time through of listening to this wonderful story, so well written and very likeable characters! A must read/listen!
Well written & very well narrated. If you haven't tried any of Milly Johnson's book you should give them a try.
"A little treacly but with a twist or two"
Story line was a little predictable but most chick lit is life always has s happy ending people always have money, a knight in shining armour pregnant at 39! But that said not as bad as it could have been and I still have the marmite image in my head lol
"A funny, warm, lovely book, beautifully read"
'Chick Lit' is a term that's often used as shorthand for frothy and instantly forgettable. This isn't either. When I read the book, Milly Johnson's first, I loved it. As as audiobook Colleen Prendergast adds another layer.
The story of 3 friends and their first pregnancies has the lot, humour, warmth, pathos, real sadness sometimes - but above all laughter, and the pictures of the scary ante-natal classes are masterly. I wish I'd been able to read this before I had children!
I lapped it all up, with so many favourite people and sections I'm spoilt for choice, but perhaps my hero is the down to earth George, Janey's husband and the outstanding scene the eventual worm turning act of Helen. If ever I'm in Barnsley on a Saturday afternoon I know what I'll be hoping to see....
The cherry on the cake is the epilogue. Perfect!
"Stick with it, it grows on you"
I love Milly Johnson books but was struggling at the beginning and was tempted to give up. I'm glad I didn't through. He was an enjoyable story of 3 pregnant friends. I feel the ending was rushed. But overall glad I stuck with it.
Loved this story funny and romantic had trouble putting it down. Light hearted and enjoyable
"Another great book by Milly Johnson"
I loved the relationship between the 3 women in the book. They are all different but they are true friends who can say what they think to each other without causing offence because they know each other so well.......true friendship! Each character was interesting. The book had me laughing out loud at times and the ending, (although a bit predictable) was the ending that you would wish for for each of them. A real 'feel good' read that cheers me up on my journey to work and back!
"A great listen ."
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Will recommend it to my friends. Will also read more by this author. Will listen again too .
A real funny feel good factor. Love the narrator really brings the book to life. I was fiddling out loud quite a few times
