Publisher's summary

In the dark, they are watching...

They are waiting for you.

No one has ever lived to tell the horrifying truth about them. Yet even now the Wolfen are gathered in the night-dark alleys ... unseen, poised ... ready to destroy their helpless human prey. Only one man and one woman, trained cops, willing to risk their lives, stand in the way.

This is cool!

This is cool! I like this different explanation of the werewolf and vampire stories. The reader's performance is great.

This is another instance in which the book is better than the movie. I liked the movie but decided to listen to the book because I find the movie to be confusing and its character motivations and explanation of what werewolves are to be unconvincing.

Terrifying

I read this book many years ago and was absolutely terrified by it! I had told my daughter about it and she wanted to read it. She was in her 30s so I decided to give it to her. She agreed it was terrifying. I was so excited to be able to listen to it on Audible. This is one of the best books I have ever read. It was wonderful to hear it.

Overlooked

Fantastic book! Vastly overlooked by many who enjoy lychan lore! Loved the slightly different view of lychans and how they came to be!

Not what I was hoping for

What I was hoping for was a story with werewolfs. it was about freaking cops.

Not Scary

I was hoping to like this story. the premise is good, the setting, 1970s NYC is good but it fell pretty flat and spoiler alert, parts are written as the wolf's point of view which I found pretty silly. but the narration was great and if you like a 70s type horror movie vibe you may like this

Only Alright

The writing was actually pretty good as far as action scenes and character interaction go, but there were a couple of big things that I didn't like about this book.

First, I hate it when authors write chapters from the perspective of monsters. Not only are they usually pretty mediocre, but I think it tames the story when the thoughts of a monster become knowable and relatable (killing prey out of hunger / to survive). It becomes less of a horror and more of just a thriller.

Second, I know the author was going for a scientific approach, but the werewolf stories where they are basically just wolves instead of slavering, shapeshifting monstrosities are boring to me. Additionally, there's no mystery in regard to who the werewolf could be.

The voice acting was pretty good, although 8 hours or whatever of New York accent is (while accurate) not exactly a pleasant experience.

Brilliant early work from supremo Whitley Strieber

Engaging from the start, with a brilliant performance from narrator Robert Fass, this story belies the encounters with unknown presences that were to later shape much of this writer's career.

A masterful horror work, if this could be conveyed with the same distinction into film it would be an instant classic, like the book itself surely is.

Plausible “werewolf’s”

I’ve loved this story for years. The narration is excellent. The set up is good enough to make you buy the fact that werewolves could exist... just not in the classic horror story format. A definite spine chiller

Non stop action

The narrative in this book keeps you wanting to know what's next. The best book I've heard so far.
