Publisher's summary

A masterpiece of historical fiction, this is the Great Novel of America's "Greatest Generation".

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

Also listen to War and Remembrance.

Critic reviews

"Wouk's real genius lies not just in the narrative power of his books, but in his empathy with the people and the times of which he writes…. The genius of The Winds of War and War and Remembrance is that they not only tell the story of the Holocaust, but tell it within the context of World War II, without which there is no understanding it." ( The Washington Post)

A book that delivers though goes too far at times

What did you love best about The Winds of War?

The story links many different sections very well though at times it does seem a little too compartmentalized. But the author does an excellent job of moving this family through so many interesting historical times while providing some emotional links at times.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Winds of War?

The description of the bombing of Poland and the hardships endured in that country were well articulated and really made me emphasize with the characters. The pre-war assignment of Germany was an enlightening prelude to the war.

Which character – as performed by Kevin Pariseau – was your favorite?

Byron becomes the darling of most of the story as the son that stumbles into fortune and misery while maintaining a certain amount of stubbornness and aloofness.

Who was the most memorable character of The Winds of War and why?

Pug is the most memorable character though at times Pug's adventures go over the top. His flight from England with British Air force was borderline ridiculous. He is all business with a few drops of emotion.

Any additional comments?

I was not sure how a book of this length would appeal to me via audio, but it really was well-done. Worth a listen to for any "historical" (not that long ago) fiction fan.

Entertaining and educational

Excellent all around. Marvelously organized and never for one minute dragged. I’m a pretty good student of the having read Churchill’s History and several regarding Roosevelt and Washington during war time. This book brought a lot of that to life.

Superb

After enjoying Caine Mutiny so much, I decided to give this epic novel a try. 32+ hours seemed like it would be daunting, but it flew by!
I must comment on the narration, it was absolutely superb!

Engrossing start to finish

Wow, what a fantastic sweeping epic. Something so Long kept me enthralled for the many hours it ran. Educating and entertaining in equal measure. Beautifully written and performed.
