Publisher's summary

A masterpiece of historical fiction, this is the Great Novel of America's "Greatest Generation".

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

Also listen to War and Remembrance.

Critic reviews

"Wouk's real genius lies not just in the narrative power of his books, but in his empathy with the people and the times of which he writes…. The genius of The Winds of War and War and Remembrance is that they not only tell the story of the Holocaust, but tell it within the context of World War II, without which there is no understanding it." ( The Washington Post)

Really engaging

I've started to read the paper version of this book many times to no avail as it is hard to find the time to sit down and read. Listening to this novel during stolen minutes throughout the days was great. Very interesting and historically accurate. The perfect mix of fiction and history.

Factual history set in a personal perspective

It was marvelous to have so many perspectives on the world situation played out in this book. The performer’s ability to change voice and accents in a split second was amazing. Herman Wouk is a master at painting word pictures even of a persons facial expressions, which I think would be most difficult. I suppose the most interesting effect of the book is to look at the office of the president in light of history and see the differences there were between the truth and newspaper reports. That certainly gives some perspective on our current events in light of the impeachment proceedings. In our news climate Roosevelt would have been impeached too.

Good WW2 Story

I enjoyed this audio book quite a bit. Finding myself happy to gettting back to listening when the time came around. I love a long audiobook and this one was looong. A bit to long winded. Also a very abrupt ending, obviously so we all must get the next installment, War and Remembrance. I’ll wait a while before I do that and get it on sale. But overall solid entertainment and informative if you are interested in WW2.

This is truly an epic read.

I read this book in high school. I enjoyed it then. But so appreciated it now as an adult! It is so well written, absolutely engaging and informative . I loved the historical account.. Highly recommend it.

Great book!

I've re-read this book, or listened to it every year since 1993 when I found it on a shelf in a London youth hostel. It reminds me how great America once was, and could be again. Compelling characters, good story and interesting bits of history.

Historical Fiction at it’s best

This is one of the best historical fiction novels I have ever read. Well written, with multidimensional characters and, despite being long, never gets tiresome.
Narration was well done, and adds to the text quality. First time I hear a narrator actually sing some of the songs within the book.
