The Wedding Gift | [Kathleen McKenna]

The Wedding Gift

Kathleen McKenna's explosive third novel, The Wedding Gift, excels in so many categories it defies them all. It is a spine-electrifying supernatural tale where a huge Southern-states mansion contains one of the most terrifying, violent, and indeed psychopathic ghosts to haunt any town. It is also a murder mystery - why did Robina Willets apparently kill all five of her young children, and her husband, before stabbing herself to death? And, if you are in the camp of believing that "justice....just is not", then this will have you frothing at the mouth.

Add to that the vision of two exceptionally beautiful girls lying on a landing stage in the middle of a secluded lake, sleeping naked in the sun...and then see if you can find any consecutive 10 minutes in this book when you don't at least snicker at the heroine Leeann's sly, caustic, sometimes-knowing sometimes "too stupid to live" commentary.

    "Nicely done!!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

When this first started I had second thoughts but it didn't take long til I LOVED it!!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Wedding Gift?

    the murders

What about Leslie Naramore’s performance did you like?

at first I wasn't sure about her but she really fit the teen voice

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    the lake

    Any additional comments?

I do not review many books but this one deserved it - I just wish it had been longer but it was a great twisted story to listen to, not many catch me off guard but this one did.

    "Painful"

I want to be fair about this review, because I only managed to get through the first hour or two. Then I had to stop.

I found the narrator unbearable. But to be fair, she's reading a first person POV narrative of an equally unbearable character. Perhaps I found it harder because I'm not American, and I'm not used to certain very strong southern accents. Maybe it was just because I found the protagonist completely alienating: she's a very stupid, self-obsessed and shallow young girl.

The meat of the horror might have been great, but I couldn't make it that far. It's rare that I give up on an audiobook.

My strong recommendation is that you have a listen to the sample before you purchase this, and if the narrator doesn't bother you, you might give it a try.

Just bleh, that about covers it. But since we need 25 words, let add, yawn, snark, really? and C'mon!

    "This is chick-lit, not horror."

If you're purchasing this as a ghost story, don't bother. The supernatural element of it is completely secondary. In my opinion, it's more an audio book aimed at the 16 - 25 market. And the ghost part just doesn't make sense at all. The whys and wherefores just don't add up.

The narration is good but the comedy nuances get a little lost.

    "The Wedding Gift"

This book starts off really slow and the narrators deep south accent is a little putting off at first, but has the story unfolds it becomes creepy and scary and very sad,in fact a little disturbing too.

When the story becomes interesting you almost forget about the narrators voice.so if you do find this story slow at first please do not give up on it this is well worth a listen.
