Excellent

I started out hating this audiobook, in fact I stopped listening after the first chapter. When I was on a 3 hour drive, another book had a glitch so ( thankfully)I went back to the Warded Man. Wowza, a fantastic story, the characters are real and the story is fresh and unique. I couldn't stop listening even after I returned home. I don't write many reviews, but this audiobook is a very good story, kudos to the author! Now, on to book #2.

Good overall. Needs better pacing

Peter Brett weaves a beautiful tale set in a grim world. It starts off great following a boy who no longer wants to live in fear. Soon after we are introduced to two other POVs. The story succumbs to some familiar cliches, and has weird pacing but it manages to keep you interested and engaged.

It does have some explicit scenes and there is a fair bit of misogyny but it’s a product of the world it’s set in.

One of the best new series in the genre!

Peter Brett will keep you turning the pages, and hungry for more. The story is original, the characters are painted in great detail, and bury themselves in your heart. You will truly be invested in the outcome.

Amazing!

This book was a little slow to begin but I sure am glad I gave it a chance! It was really good! It was an original idea! The only thing I have to complain about is the ending. It leaves you hanging and you're like what just happened (at the very end), but still well worth the read. It makes me hope there's a sequel that will fill in all the blanks

well worth your time

The story is well done. I like the premise. The wide range of characters and their strength against a tidal wave of demons makes for a listen that finished way too soon . I'm looking forward to the desert spear.

"completed" 5 book fantasy series.

Woah this series is off to an amazing start. At first I was a little confused with the narrator changing perspective, but once I figured out who was who, I couldnt stop listening.

I feel conflicted...

There are parts about this story that are great. It's immersive, easy to read, the story flows well and has a nice balance of action and world building. The world and concept of the world is interesting and for the most part well executed.

There are also parts that could be very very off putting for some readers. It's not PG in the slightest the writer does not beat around the bush in terms of gore, violence, and sensual material. There are also two massively implausible/unrealistic things that occur in the story which I believe could ruin the enjoyment of the story for many people.

1) How has no one thought to do what the protagonist does before? Not necessarily in the offensive sense but in the defensive sense? This thought annoyed the hell out of me. I understand the intent of the writer was to show that our characters live in a world of cowards but humans aren't stupid and the humans in this world are portrayed as incredibly dumb and lacking in creativity and ingenuity which has never been the case for the human race.

2) One of the main characters gets r*ped and their recovery from that is far, far to quick. I think the writer unintentionally lightens the gravity of what happened to her which is not okay and it doesn't appropriately take into account nor portray how traumatic and debilitating this can be it's totally unrealistic. However I don't want to just bash the writer on this and I don't want to assume he doesn't know this and so in his defense I can see what he intended based on the overarching theme of this book which is about the main characters being symbols of breaking free from the things in their life that hold them back. The writer intended to create characters who inspired people to do the same, to fight against injustice and oppression and be beacons of strength. However the way he does this is not realistic nor does it make the characters feel relatable. I feel like he should have made the book longer and taken his time showing the mental character development that happens.
