Publisher's summary

It's one minute after the Big One. Marty Slack, a TV network executive, crawls out from under his Mercedes, parked outside what once was a downtown Los Angeles warehouse, the location for a new TV show. Downtown LA is in ruins. The sky is thick with black smoke. His cell phone is dead. The freeways are rubble. The airport is demolished. Buildings lay across streets like fallen trees. It will be days before help can arrive.

Marty has been expecting this day all his life. He's prepared. In his car are a pair of sturdy walking shoes and a backpack of food, water, and supplies. He knows there is only one thing he can do... that he must do: get home to his wife, Beth, go back to their gated community on the far edge of the San Fernando Valley.

All he has to do is walk. But he will quickly learn that it's not that easy.

His dangerous, unpredictable journey home will take him through the different worlds of what was once Los Angeles. Wildfires rage out of control. Flood waters burst through collapsed dams. Natural gas explosions consume neighborhoods. Sinkholes swallow entire buildings. Aftershocks rip apart the ground. Looters rampage through the streets. There's no power. No running water. No order.

Marty Slack thinks he's prepared. He's wrong. Nothing can prepare him for this ordeal, a quest for his family and for his soul, a journey that will test the limits of his endurance and his humanity, a trek from the man he was to the man he can be... if he can survive The Walk.

Story good, lots of cussing.

The story was good but it seems that a lot of writers fill there pages with as much foul words as they can. This book is no exception. You get tired of the dialogue.

Interesting....

Any additional comments?

I really liked this! I was a little unsure at first and had to learn to love the main character Marty, or at least learn to like him. There were a few things that didn't make sense, but all in all it tied together. The way the book ended was a little disappointing. The idea behind it was really good - it just would have been better if there had been a little lead in to it and a little after story. This book was interesting and entertaining and has given me a few things to think about.

I recommend this story

At first I was concerned about the plot being based on an overdone topic. It was a good read though and well thought out. Enjoyed the sarcastic humor.

Entertaining

Buck was hilarious ! Surreal action and awkward comedy made the story flow very nicely.

Different

I had just listened to Goldberg's King City and enjoyed it. This book is completely different.

In some ways the story reminded me of one of Stephen King's Gunslinger novels. The action often making little sense, not sure if the character was dreaming or awake. I was going to quit halfway through but am glad I stuck with it.

Marty grows as a character and as a man through his ordeal. What more can you ask for?

Wow!

As a native So. Californian I'm very aware of the "big one." Mr. Goldberg gave a very realistic picture of Los Angeles post-earthquake along with a fascinating story.

I hate walking but liked this walk

Would you consider the audio edition of The Walk to be better than the print version?

Haven't seen the print version

What other book might you compare The Walk to and why?

This isn't a typical end of the world type book. It isn't a howto guide. It isn't a political statement. It doesn't involve zombies. So with books doing the rounds at the moment I haven't seen any to compare it to.

What about Luke Daniels’s performance did you like?

The way he made me feel as though the world/God/higher power/life was out to get him. The twist and turns as a result of that

If you could take any character from The Walk out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I take his wife because she sounds hot hehehe

Great book

I almost quit listening to this book but decided to look at the reviews. One said to keep reading. So I did. I loved it, except for the cussing especially the over use of the F word. But the story was a good one.
