Publisher's summary

The Loire Valley, 1895. When 17-year-old Sara Thibault's father is killed in a mudslide, her mother sells their vineyard to a rival family whose eldest son marries Sara's sister, Lydia. But a violent tragedy compels Sara and her sister to flee to New York, forcing Sara to put aside her dream of following in her father's footsteps as a master winemaker. Meanwhile, Philippe Lemieux has arrived in California with the ambition of owning the largest vineyard in Napa by 1900. When he receives word of his brother's death in France, he resolves to bring the killer to justice.

Sara has traveled to California in hopes of making her own way in the winemaking world. When she encounters Philippe in a Napa vineyard, they are instantly drawn to one another, but Sara knows he is the one man who could return her family's vineyard to her - or send her straight to the guillotine.

A riveting tale of betrayal, retribution, love, and redemption, Kristen Harnisch's debut novel immerses listeners in the rich vineyard culture of both the Old and New Worlds, the burgeoning cities of late 19th-century America, and a spirited heroine's fight to determine her destiny.

Entertaining Enough

Nice story with great use of languages and culture with a peak of early American. I'm not a wine connoisseur and I believe that would have made this book more enjoyable.

French

In this narration the French accent did not interfere with understanding and did not require a knowledge of the French language. I liked this historical novel, set in the late 1800s, but there were too many coincidences in the characters' circumstances, and the ending fell flat.

Lovely

It was a bit slow at first but turned into a beautiful love story. I strongly suggest this book. I wasn’t much into love stories but this one is well worth the listen.

pleasantly surprised

I was pulled into the story so much that I couldn't put it down and listened every chance I got. The story is full of rich characters, a brave heroine and suspenseful up until the very end . With the backdrop of France and America, it was thoroughly enjoyable. Can't wait for author to write another novel.

Loved it

The narrator was awesome. I really enjoyed her reading and changing voices and accents for the characters. I also loved the story line, the twists and turns and the eventual forgiveness. Great listen.
