Ruby stealing Maureen.
Maureen finally being free!
I would take Maureen to dinner just to give her a sense of independence and normalcy from Mama Ruby.
I really hate that Mama Ruby turned out to be such a deadly character compared to her beginings as Ruby Jean in "Mama Ruby"!
love the story, the author, the narrator, and beginning, middle and end. awesome book with hilarious moments beginning to end. omly other books i've found this funny were Guerrilla Black, Huck Finn, and Color Purple. t
This book made me listen to countless other books by the author but this by far her best work. HILARIOUS!!!!!!
I have read the book several times...The author make the people in the book seem so real...especially Mama Ruby
Not sure I've read any thing like The Upper Room...
Probably Mama Ruby
When mama Ruby got shot
Kevin Free made this book come alive. I couldn't stop laughing!
Characters on Parade
Mama Ruby is my favorite character. She is the center of a universe of misfits. While every fan of Mama Ruby knows she is unpredictable, her antics still have the ability to shock and amuse the reader. The hilarity of her perspectives and actions are magnified when contextualized by the reactions and perspectives of the cast of characters with whom Mama Ruby interacts daily.
Prior to listening to the Upper Room, I listened to Kevin Free's narration of "Mama Ruby". Mr. Free is extremely talented and his ability to enliven characters from the page provided me with a brand new experience with this reading of the Upper Room. I had previously read the Upper Room years ago, but chose to listen to it again through Audible. I think I enjoyed the story far more with Mr. Free's narration. With both performances, Mr. Free does an excellent job, however, he exceeded the mark with the Upper Room.
Through out the story, Mama Ruby guarded against "maniacs" who may attempt to "rape" her or Maureen. When a true rape did occur, I found it ironic that the perpetrator was not "chastened" by Mama Ruby's methods, though one could argue that justice was still served.
Kevin Free's narration of Mary Monroe's The Upper Room results in the perfect storytelling experience!
Love books on tape! It's all about the narrators for me though. No matter how good the story, if the narrator doesn't cut it...
What can I say except that it was great all around. Mama Ruby was awesome too as well as the narration. Thanks for the entertainment, Ms. Monroe.
A believable storyline! I've read plenty of fiction and fantasy... The Wizard of Oz was more believable. This story did not have a hint of reality or symbolism. It was like reading someone's bad dream. The characters were simple, unevovled, and none of them were likeable. I was so turned off by all of them. I saw that time passed but the characters stayed childlike throughout the book...
This book does not even fit into a "genre"... It's turned me off from this author.
Kevin Free did a great job in bringing this book alive. His performance is the only reason why I kept listening. He gave each character a voice and personality of their own. I've heard Kevin Free read in other books, but this and Mamma Ruby (the "prequel") were his best performances.
Kevin Free was the redeeming quality.
This book had to be the craziest story ever told. I was often confused about what was happening and how we reached many of the scenes. After the book was completed I was left with a bad taste in my mouth.
I believe it is in the top 10
I like the part where Ophelia came back to claim her daughter. I think that the fight scene between Mama Ruby and Ophelia was a highlight in this audiobook.
I don't like his narration when the lead character is a woman.
Maureen, because she has so much knowledge and ignorance.
I was surprised about the number of killings that took place in the book, and did not expect the killings to be so excessive and throughout the audiobook. At the same time, I think the author was effective in defining the spirit of each of the characters in this book.
