I am an avid Karen Slaughter fan. I love her Grant County and Will Trent books. These short stories however are VERY dark with absolutely no redeeming qualities. Suffered through to the last because I am a fan and was always hopeful that the NEXT story would be good. On the contrary, they only seemed to get worse. Please don't waste your time and mental capacity on these short stories.

Avid reader. Constant Audible listener. Currently deep into foreign crime detective novels. Especially a fan of noire and police procedural.

    Story
    "Literary Manhater!"
Would you try another book from Karin Slaughter and/or Shannon Cochran?

Maybe, if the subject matter were different

What do you think your next listen will be?

Waiting for Jo Nesbo's The Son, and the next book in Louise Penny's Gamache series.

What character would you cut from The Unremarkable Heart and Other Stories?

When you cut the bitter, angry, vengeful women from the stories, there isn't much left!

    Any additional comments?

Avoid this book at all costs

"Definitely not written for happy feelings"
Would you try another book from Karin Slaughter and/or Shannon Cochran?

    No

What was most disappointing about Karin Slaughter’s story?

Very depressing, and the female characters in multiple stories are weak

What does Shannon Cochran bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Emotion and tone not seen in the words

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Unremarkable Heart and Other Stories?

Way too many of the stories include the death of children

    "Terrific short stories!"

Karin Slaughter writes these slightly wicked stories always with a twist. You THINK you know the story as you're listening, only to find out at the end that you most definitely DO NOT! Good stuff, and great length for listening to while driving to/from work. Never heard this reader before and she does some good, varied voices. Recommended.

    "Dark"

I bought this for a change of pace....something different. It got very good reviews and I usually find them accurate based on my preferences. This book/stories were just too dark for my taste...the narrator was good I thought and did a good job with each....but the subject matter on each was just too dark for me....I almost turned it off a few times, but stuck with it because I knew it was going somewhere....but in the end, in each story, I just felt like....yuck/really??/ lets move on. I just cant recommend it at all....

    "very dark"

The stories are well written, but VERY dark in nature. It was not what I consider "entertainment". I had to skip some of the stories due to the subject matter. Is our world as horrible and ugly as the author describes... yes, but do we really want to read/listen to the intimate accounts of it. Not I. I tried to give it a good listen, but could not finish it.

I'm a dedicated reader/listener. My tastes are very eclectic, and there's not much I don't like except horror and dull history.

    Story
    "Awful book. Couldn't finish!"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I almost always finish a book, no matter how much I may dislike it, but this one simply became intolerably repulsive. And I like Karin Slaughter! Was she in a deep depression when she wrote these stories? The first story was interesting and had a nice twisted ending and I was telling a friend I sort of liked the book...but then I had to take that back. The second story was twisted and unpleasant and the thIrd was positively gruesome. And the main character in the fourth was a selfish, totally unlikeable you-know-what. I started to listen to the last story and after five minutes tossed in the towel.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I'm now listening to Julian Barnes "A Sense of an Ending." Not my usual type of book, but it might be a welcome change. I'm also reading the third book in the Divergent trilogy. I am a rather eclectic reader... My next listen after Barnes will be Creole Belle or Still Foolin' Em.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Shannon Cochran?

Yes, the narration was fine. Not her fault the plots and character were so awful.

What character would you cut from The Unremarkable Heart and Other Stories?

    All of them!

    Any additional comments?

I will stick to Karin Slaughter's mainstream novels, and will read reviews carefully before buying!!

Would you be willing to try another one of Shannon Cochran’s performances?

    No

    The whole book.

    "Just not right at ALL."

I really had a problem with this collection of short stories. I know the job of an author is to evoke emotions in the reader, but I'm not sure what she was going for here. If it was to make me feel sick to my stomach and depressed, I guess she got it right. I actually believed the stories must be written by someone who hates women.

I stopped listening to the book after 3 of the short stories. The first story was marginally better then the rest. In a way I wish it hadn't of been, because I kept listening. The second was terrible and wrong... I think I was too stunned to turn the recording off. But it was the third short story what really killed me. The fact that character, who worked in a church and knew God's teachings, would feel that God would want her to give herself a "back alley abortion" was just horrible. It goes against all that I hold dear and hopefully a lot of other, but I'm not sure because the book still has a high star rating. (Just in case, I'm not a bible thumper by any means. Killing a baby in any form is wrong. And the reason she does it seems wrong. She says it is because she doesn't have insurance for the medical bills! She could contact an number of adoption agencies and find a family willing to help her. Sorry I could keep ranting, but it is pointless anyway.)

The narration was done well. Another reason I kept listening... but really shouldn't.

"Series of Short Stories-dark, sadistic, and scary"
Would you listen to The Unremarkable Heart and Other Stories again? Why?

No, never again. They were dark, sadistic, and scary.

    too weird for my tastes.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Did not enjoy any of the stories, but decided to finish the book, since I purchased it.
Way out of my league- Too twisted and gory

    Which scene was your favorite?

None of them because I was not expecting horror and scary short stores. I will never read this book again.

Who was the most memorable character of The Unremarkable Heart and Other Stories and why?

None of them because I was not expecting horror and scary short stores. I will never read this book again.

    Any additional comments?

I gave this book a 5 rating because it delivered exactly what it was suppose to. I think the title was misleading, but each of the short stories was graphic, some sadistic and others scary.
It took me a couple of days to forget about the horrible stories, but the writing was excellent, if you like scary, and horror books. I do not.
