"My Favorite of Georgette Heyer books"
What did you love best about The Unknown Ajax?

Both the narrator's performance and the storyline was wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed both. The characters were believable. I loved the way the plot developed. Was humorous and suspenseful.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved the Major for both his moral standards and sense of humour.

What does Daniel Philpott bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Mr. Philpott has a wonderful voice. However, his betrayal of each of his characters brought them to life. Georgette Heyer would have approved of Mr. Philpott's portrayal of them.

If you could take any character from The Unknown Ajax out to dinner, who would it be and why?

The hero, of course! I would be thoroughly entertained just by listening to his talking about his travels and the people around him.

    Any additional comments?

This is a really good audio book. I definitely recommend it.

    "Wonderful"

I have loved Georgette Heyer books since..forever. Each and everyone is a joy. I love that she writes a good story, the characters are believable, the clothes are something I would love to see. How many times can a person say wonderful in a review?
The narrator is just right and makes the book come to life.

    "Engaging Story, Extraordinary Narration,"
What did you love best about The Unknown Ajax?

This is my best Audible listen yet. In an Audible book, I look for a good story (one that I find in some way inspiring as well as entertaining) that's decently read. My previous favourite would be Brandon Sanderson's Way of Kings. But the Unknown Ajax isn't just decently read. Daniel Philpott's narration is fabulous, incredible. His voices, even his female voices, were spot on. Laugh-out-loud delightful. Characters were distinct and I felt the narration warmed me to them in a way that surpassed anything I would have experienced by reading alone.

What did you like best about this story?

Our hero's cheerful, humble confidence and competence and what it ultimately did for everyone around him. The story was a literary romp that offered me some surprising insight.

Have you listened to any of Daniel Philpott’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Never. I've now gone hunting for others of his narrations, but none of the titles particularly appeal. I wish he'd do more Heyer.

    "Never excites or exalts"

Hmmmmmmmm. Alright, so the writing is good. There are occasional great turns of phrase, and a bit of decent highbrow humor. The entire book is quite reminiscent of Downton Abby -- what with all the earls and ladies and the constant reminders of one’s proper place in British society.

However, the story moves like molasses at times, and as much as everything seems in place for a good read, it just never excites, exalts, or makes me feel like I’m lucky to have picked it up. I’m not overly disappointed that I read (listened to) it, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

    "Thoroughly Entertaining"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I highly recommend this book. It has been over a quarter of century since I have read a Georgette Heyer book. I decided to give this book a try since I definitely didn't remember any of her books that I had read previously. I sure hope I didn't start with the cream of the crop! The narration was spot on! I will be looking for more books narrated by Philpott. The supporting cast of characters was a treasure. A good, old fashioned romance, with a nice mystery that was predictable, but handled so well. I chuckled many times during the last scene. I had gotten to know the characters so well at that point it was funny to hear their performances to ensure the family name was spared any tarnishing. Just goes to show a well written book can stand the test of time!

"Brilliant performance of a favorite novel"
    Any additional comments?

I have been delighting in reading and re-reading Heyer's novels for decades, and Hugo, the Unknown Ajax of the title, has always been one of my greatest favorites of her characters, so I was very pleased to find that an audiobook version was available.

I wouldn't have imagined that I could feel even greater affection for this book, but narrator Daniel Philpott made it happen, doubling and redoubling an already deep attachment. This is one of the best audiobook readings I have ever heard. He brilliantly and with impeccable consistency voiced each of the large cast of characters, each entirely distinct and marvelously, flawlessly performed. I will never again think of this book, or read the text, without hearing his character voices in my head.

    Highest recommendations.

    "Entertaining"
What made the experience of listening to The Unknown Ajax the most enjoyable?

Loved all the characters. It started off as a comedy of manners. All of the family was in a dither about this unknown cousin inheriting the Baronacy and the estate. Since his father had married a weaver's daughter, they were expecting a country bumpkin.

What did you like best about this story?

The, ghosts, the smuggling and the "coverup".

What does Daniel Philpott bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I liked his narration, but I couldn't understand the Major's groom.

Who was the most memorable character of The Unknown Ajax and why?

Of course, the Major, but the young lad also.

    Any additional comments?

This is a witty book and a romance almost as an afterthought. I listened to it straight through. Very few books are as entertaining and keep my attention so that I don't put it down.

    "A narrator's triumph"
What made the experience of listening to The Unknown Ajax the most enjoyable?

The narrator did an excellent job of managing the many characters and accents, especially the women's voices.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Unknown Ajax?

The interactions between the hero and heroine.

What about Daniel Philpott’s performance did you like?

See above. I could not have understood some of the "cant" without him.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. But it was very engaging over several days.

    Any additional comments?

The reading highlighted some of the weaknesses of Heyer--but enjoyable nonetheless.

    "Always a winner"

I am a die-hard GH fan. My paperback copies are yellowing on my shelf and I have every unabridged romance title that Audible offers.

What does one say about GH titles? Escapism at its best! Is her history authentic? I don't know but she does her best to create a mood and a setting that you want to believe is authentic. Her characters are always delightful even if her stereotypes date her--she was writing in the 1930s. You know who the good guys are and who the bad guys are and you know who is gonna get the girl in the end. So what! Her books are always a delightful romp and THE UNKNOWN AJAX is no exception.

    "one of my favorite GH"

This has always been one of my Favorite Heyer books. The narration was ok. I tend to think of GH in female voices.
Not quite the emphasis I've thought of, but not bad.
There were at least 2 spots however, that there were parts of sentences missing.
