Publisher's summary

When handsome British viscount Major Lord Peter Tremayne commandeers her home, rebel Kate Grey throws caution to the wind and responds to his seduction. But a spy in her own household steals the military dispatches Tremayne carries, ensuring his disgrace - and implicating Kate in high treason. Months later, having narrowly escaped court martial and hanging, Tremayne returns to decadent, British-occupied Philadelphia with a new assignment - to capture the woman he believes betrayed him. Worse, the glamorous fiancée of his own dissolute cousin is none other than Kate Grey, now an undercover spy. And so begins their dangerous dance, between passion and patriotism, between certain death and the promise of a brave new future together.

Skip this version, reader is not enjoyable, at all

Where does The Turncoat rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is an excellent book. I actually read it first and decided to get this version because I loved it that much; I'm sorry I wasted the credit. Listen to the sample, it doesn't get any better.

As for the book itself, it is easily the most enjoyable historical-fiction I've ever read about the American Revolution, but not for the obvious reasons. The history is there, but only because of the setting. It's mostly a (somewhat steamy) romantic-thriller. There is intrigue, debauchery, sexual tension, explicit sex (not gratuitous, but it works) and much more. I highly recommend the book (just not the audible version.)

What other book might you compare The Turncoat to and why?

No comparison to anything out there in this genre. Who knew the American Revolution could be so sexy.

Would you be willing to try another one of Madeleine Lambert’s performances?

Never.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Sex, intrigue and debauchery

Any additional comments?

This is a debut novel for the writer and can't wait to read the next installment "Terms of Engagement" next March. Hunt down the book trailer on youtube or the author's website. I wish they'd actually make the movie—it was that good.

Good story, not so good narrator

I hate to give a bad review about anything, but I just have to say that the narration on this book was really pretty bad. It's a shame because the story is actually pretty good because I read along at times using my Kindle with the Whispersync app. And as I was reading I was enjoying it but when I listen I got frustrated with the narration.

A WINNER!

There is nothing like a well written, well narrated romance. Nothing. When I find one I listen to it over and over again. If this audiobook was in paper format (and it probably is), my copy would be dog-eared, with pages falling out from over-use. This well-researched historical romance goes places romances don't usually go, like the American Revolutionary War, and uh other places too. The heroine is a Yankee spy and there's some of the harsh reality of what that entails thrown in, so be advised. The hero starts out as something of a bad guy, but then comes around to become one of my favorite heroes ever. If I say too much more I will be revealing too much of the plot. I'll just add that I have both read and listened to a lot of romances, and this one is on my short list of truly great ones. Author Donna Thorland has a trailer for this book on her website that is worth looking at. She is a Hollywood screenplay writer, so a trailer makes sense. This is her first book but it sure doesn't read like she's a newby, because she isn't. As I said the book is well-narrated.That doesn't mean that this is my favorite narrator, but she's very good. To summarize: great book, great writing, great heroine, and a hero to die for. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

Great historical novel, not so great narration

Overall, I enjoyed the story but I hate to say that I suffered through the narration. The characters were nicely woven into the fabric of history. The language and behavior of the characters didn’t quite match with the customs and traditions of those days but the facts and events were close enough. I think I would have enjoyed reading the book than listening to audio version.

Disappointing

The story was mediocre at best, and I didn't care for the narrator at all.

Not bad, just not gripping

The Turncoat is a story with a lot of history and espionage however, it just didn’t keep me wanting to hear more. I finished the book, but it took me a while to do so, when normally a book this size, I usually finish within a day, no more than two.
That being said, it is a decent book, but the characters just seem to need more chemistry between them.

Action-Packed Racy Read

I really enjoyed this piece of historical fiction. Loved the strong female main character and her growth from a chaste farm girl to a chased-after spy and coveted lover. She is exciting and adventurous, and also full of honor. Many men seek her company, but only one seems worthy of it. Will he prove himself in the end? Will she choose her country or the man she loves? Set during the Revolutionary War, the story is also chock full of battles and intrigue as well fantastic literary depictions of 18th Century Philadelphia society and fashions. My one criticism is that the reader's English accent left a bit to be desired, but it wasn't too difficult to put that aside for the rest of the performance. I would also suggest to other listers of this audio book to use headphones if you're listening at work or in the presence of children as the book does get a bit bloody and a bit racy at times.
