Publisher's summary

Number-one New York Times best-selling author Kim Harrison returns to her beloved Hollows series with The Turn, the official prequel to the series that will introduce fans and listeners to a whole new side of Rachel Morgan's world as they've never seen it before!

Can science save us when all else fails?

Trisk and her hated rival, Kal, have the same goal: save their species from extinction.

But death comes in the guise of hope when a genetically modified tomato created to feed the world combines with the government's new tactical virus, giving it an unexpected host and a mode of transport. Plague rises, giving the paranormal species the choice to stay hidden and allow humanity to die or to show themselves in a bid to save them.

Under accusations of scientific misconduct, Trisk and Kal flee across a plague-torn United States to convince leaders of the major paranormal species to save their supposedly weaker kin, but not everyone thinks humanity should be saved, and Trisk fights the prejudices of two societies to prove not only that humanity does have something to offer but that long-accepted beliefs against women, dark magic, and humanity itself can turn to understanding; that when people are at their worst, the best show their true strength, and that love can hold the world together as a new balance is found.

A Little Slow

I am a big Kim Harrison fan and was very excited about another book in my favorite world. I wasn't sure what to expect since this was a prequel. I was very interested to learn about The Turn and this book was very good at filling in the history behind that event. At times the story was a little slow and at times there was a little too much introspection from the characters. I would like to say I liked the heroine but I didn't. As a scientist I expected her to be a little more analytical but she made a lot of decisions based on her emotions. This didn't make for a very strong female lead. After a time I found myself rolling my eyes when she bemoaned the outcome of a decision. The antagonist was written really well and I did really hate him. My only complaint was his fate. I didn't like that at all although I understand why it had to happen that way based on the series. The performance by Marguerite Gavin was very good. I knew which character was speaking at all times and she put the right spin on the story. I would definitely listen to other books she narrates. All in all "The Turn" is a good book for fans of the series but without a stronger female lead I can't give the story more than three stars.

I'm sorry I finished it too fast!

Where does The Turn rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I just love The Hollows series, Kim Harrison and Marguerite Gavin. I loved this prequel but it was too short! I did not want the book to end. The story was actually very exciting. I loved the pixy Orchid. Kim's world building is one of the best. Listening to this was like catching up with an old friend.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes! A page turner.

What does Marguerite Gavin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I've listened to all The Hollows series books because of Marguerite Gavin. Unfortunately, I believe it was book 6 which I read on my kindle because I couldn't stand a different narrator. I loved Marguerite Gavin in all the Kitty Norville books too. When I see her name as narrator, I automatically have a positive view of a book. She just makes the books come alive.

The Beginning!!

I am so happy that Kim Harrison wrote another story that made me think of the Hollows! I honestly hated the last two books she has written. I was sad and upset that Rachel Morgan was gone but knew there was more story to tell. I actually read Kim's webpage and I know she was upset that her NEW stories The Perri Reed Chronicles didn't go so well. She was worried that her career as a writer was over. I left a message to let her know I tried the new stories but I just didn't like them. I even suggested that she write some stories about other characters in the story and their life before Rachel, others did to. I am just thrilled that she did.

This story shed some light to how it all began and it's a 5 star rating for sure. Kim if you read this just know that your fans of Rachel are pleased, I know I am. I hope you bring more stories of other characters to us. I love Marguerite Gavin and I think this is the only narrator you'll ever need so don't waste money for others. I'm still wishing your publisher would redo The Outlaw Demon Wails because I like to re-listen to all of your stories and the narrator just killed that story but you know this to.

Marguerite Gavin is absolutely wonderful! She always sounds perfect and her voice just lures you in. I have LOVED every story she's narrated for Kim Harrison. She is a very talented lady. Her voice is priceless for sure. Thank you both for a very enjoyable and interesting sixteen hours non-stop story!

Would have liked a stronger female lead

This is a well-written book and excellently narrated by Marguerite Gavin. My qualm, the female, the lead, the character driving the story. SPOILER ALERT,:. I know books like life, do not have predictable endings however, I would have liked for the protagonist's character continue where she began, strong, brilliant, intelligent with a determination to succeed given the opportunity. SPOILER ALERT again: But through all the betrayal, lies and caca thrown at her, she resigns herself to an unhappy, dutiful fate? Did I read this correctly or are we going to see the unfolding of her real strength in book two? Yes, this reader will buy the next installment just to find out. If not, I'm done.

Like coming home again

Kim Harrison is one of my favorite authors on earth! I love all of her work, but the Hollows will forever have a special place in my heart and soul. I adored this book. I loved seeing some of the old Hollows characters so much younger, and the new characters were wonderful. Trisk was such a brilliant heroine, the tapestry of new and old characters was a wonder to behold! The story was captivating from beginning to end. If you are a fan of the Hollows this is a must listen.
As expected, Marguerite Gavin was spectacular. To hear her voice a new Hollows book again made me so incredibly happy. You really can't go wrong with Kim Harrison and Marguerite Gavin!
Happy listening!

Kim Harrison knocks it out of the park!!

Great prequel to the Hollows Series. This book gives greater understanding to Trent's parents and Quinn's role in everything. The Turn changed everything.

Absolutely fantastic!

Everything I loved about The Hollows! A total homerun! Dear Kim Harrison, Please please please keep writing books in this world. Even though it was a different time and of new characters, it was like coming home. If you are new to this world, starting here will be the greatest introduction to the Series, if you are reading this after the series, you will fall in love all over again.
