In this 15th installment of the Aubrey-Maturin series, a British whaler has been captured by an ambitious chief in the Sandwich Islands at French instigation, and Captain Aubrey is dispatched with the Surprise to restore order. But stowed away in the cable-tier is an escaped female convict.

What the Critics Say

"This entry in O'Brian's late-18th-century seafaring series will delight fans, while offering newcomers a good place to jump in." (Publishers Weekly)
"The writing is as strong and delightfully various as the people and plots. And everything - skies and seas and ports and creatures - is vividly, sensuously present." (London Evening Standard)
"What lifts The Truelove into the highest ranks of fiction is what it shares with the rest of its author's writing┬┐ unmistakably original insights into the mysteries of the world." (Chicago Tribune)

    "enjoyable"

One of my father's favorite authors, but I wasn't sure it would be my cup of tea. I ended up enjoying the book, and the narrator's performance added a lot to the experience. I already have another O'Brian book in my queue.

    "A grand adventure"

They just keep getting better and better. Drama at sea and a horrifying battle on land. Another epic tale. If you enjoy the series you'll love this one.

Patrick O'Brian is an addiction and I'm hooked. Dr. Mautrin has Laudinum and Coca but I have Lucky Jack and the doctor.

    "Truelove : Lost Cause"

The first audible book I couldn't even listen to. Boring, just a lost cause. I do not recommend to anyone.

    "pointless"

I just wasted 9 hours listening to this audiobook hoping it would have a point. How anyone rated it 5 stars is beyond me. The story had no point and was filled with sailing jargon in GREAT detail. I do not recommend it.
